Job summary

3GA Marine Ltd. is a Canadian naval architecture and marine engineering firm with offices in Victoria and Burnaby. We seek Naval Architects to develop innovative designs and perform vessel surveys, backed by training in software, safety certifications, and 3D laser scanning.

You will work under senior staff to learn, grow, and deliver high-quality engineering work, with a focus on design and field surveys across diverse projects and vessel sizes.

Job description

Please note: This is primarily an office-based naval architecture and vessel design role, though it also includes on-site vessel survey work (condition surveys, lightship surveys, inclining experiments) that may involve vertical ladder ascent/descent, confined spaces, and working at heights. Full training is provided by 3GA. We are hiring at all levels — Junior, Intermediate, and Senior — with responsibilities aligned to the candidate’s experience.

3GA Marine is a partnership of marine professionals providing engineering, project support, surveying, and consulting services to the Canadian marine industry. With offices in Victoria and Burnaby, we are a full-service naval architecture and marine engineering company delivering practical, turnkey solutions throughout the lifecycle of a vessel. Our work includes engineered solutions for new vessel designs and vessel refits, from concept through implementation. Projects vary in complexity and scale, from small equipment installations to detailed whole-vessel designs.

Position Overview

As our Naval Architect, you will be responsible for the development and input of innovative solutions for a variety of clients. You will be exposed to a diverse range of engineering challenges in a fast-paced collaborative environment. 3GA uses the latest in technology and software to provide our clients with high-value engineering products. You will be trained in an array of software, safety certifications, and 3D laser scanning equipment to facilitate efficient and effective data collection whilst conducting vessel surveys. You will use the data and software to perform naval architect functions to carry out Basic, Functional, and Detail Design. You will work under the guidance of our senior staff to learn, grow, and produce exceptional engineering work.

Responsibilities / Duties
  • Work directly with senior naval architects, engineers, and project managers in the planning and execution of technical activities on a variety of complex projects related to new vessel design or vessel refit work.
  • Work with senior-level staff and other colleagues in all aspects of Naval Architecture.
  • Perform design, documentation development, analysis, and modelling tasks using appropriate software packages.
  • Participate in various stages of the construction process, as assigned. Solve problems and make recommendations as appropriate.
  • Undertake onsite vessel surveys (condition surveys, lightship surveys, inclining experiments) including vertical ladder ascent and descent, accessing confined spaces, and working at heights. Training will be provided by 3GA.
Skills and Required Competencies
  • Strong technical writing skills including the ability to produce and present clear, detailed written technical specifications, procedures, and reports.
  • Working knowledge of Rhino, ACAD software, and MS Suite.
  • Working knowledge of Ship Constructor is an asset.
  • Familiar with aspects of vessel design including hull, stability, and structure.
  • Committed to a high standard of safety and able to comply with all safety laws and 3GA safety policies and procedures.
  • Exercise sound judgment and make decisions in a manner consistent with the essential job functions.

Compensation, Requirements & Location

Salary Range
$75,000 – $110,000 CAD
Junior to intermediate-level hiring range, depending on relevant marine engineering background, design capabilities, software proficiency, and overall fit. Senior Naval Architect candidates will be considered at a higher hiring rate, commensurate with experience and qualifications. Includes eligibility for overtime, benefits, training, and profit sharing based on company and individual performance.

Senior Naval Architect candidates with advanced technical expertise, leadership capability, and responsibility for guiding complex engineering work, mentoring junior team members, reviewing technical deliverables, supporting project planning, and ensuring quality, regulatory compliance, and client expectations are met will be considered at a higher hiring rate, commensurate with experience and qualifications. In a senior capacity, this role is expected to positively influence team outcomes by strengthening technical consistency, supporting efficient project execution, improving collaboration across disciplines, and helping the team deliver high-quality work on schedule.
