Job summary

Qualifications

• Minimum 1–2 years of experience in a security role.

• Must work regular weekends, evenings, holidays and special events.
• Ability to be friendly yet commanding in communication.
• Excellent observational skills and attention to detail.

Responsibilities

• Monitor artworks, visitors, staff, and museum property to ensure safety.
• Greet and assist visitors; be available to answer questions throughout MOCA Toronto.
• Stay informed about daily events and inform visitors as needed.
• Enforce security and safety procedures in all public spaces.
• Answer questions about exhibits, wayfinding and facilities.
• Become knowledgeable about MOCA, the building, and the local cultural community.
• Circulate the museum as assigned and support busy floors.
• Detect and respond to potential interference with artworks.

This role emphasizes providing a welcoming environment, promoting respect for the artworks, and ensuring that visitors follow the museum's guidelines to maintain a safe and enjoyable space for all.

Key Responsibilities

• Provide consistent monitoring of artworks, visitors, staff, and museum property, ensuring their safety from damage
• Be a host — greet and welcome all visitors to MOCA, and be available to answer questions throughout the museum
• Stay current with the daily schedule of events, informing visitors as needed
• Enforce security and safety procedures and protocols in all public spaces of the museum
• Answering visitor questions concerning exhibits, wayfinding, and facilities
• Become an expert in MOCA’s programmes, the museum building and its place in the Junction Triangle neighbourhood and cultural community
• When assigned, circulate the museum and support busier floors
• Detect and respond to potential interference of artwork
• Ensuring visitors follow museum rules
• Support in completing reports as needed
• Manage traffic and visitor wayfinding within the museums
• Provide support during museum events, including weekends and holidays
• Undertake other duties as assigned by the supervisor
• Provide support to special events and venue rentals as needed
• Report damage or change in condition of spaces/ art objects immediately

Skills, Knowledge and Expertise

Must-haves

• Minimum 1-2 years of experience in a security role
• Minimum 1 year of experience in a customer service role
• High school diploma or GED equivalent
• Must be able to work regular weekends, evenings, holidays and special events
• Must have the ability to be both friendly and commanding in communication
• Excellent observational skills and attention to detail
• Ability to work independently
• Ability to interact effectively with a diverse range of individuals
• Physically capable of standing and walking for extended periods, as well as responding to emergencies swiftly

Nice-to-haves

• Conflict resolution/de-escalation and anti-oppression training
• First aid certification
