Job summary

The Town of Canmore is seeking a Municipal Enforcement Officer – Compliance (MEO-C) to enforce the Land Use Bylaw, Business Registry Bylaw, and residential declarations. You will educate the public and ensure compliance through education and enforcement actions.

Responsibilities include patrols, issuing notices, documenting actions in databases, handling complaints, and coordinating with other departments to achieve voluntary compliance while maintaining thorough records.

Qualifications

  • Valid Alberta Class 5 Driver’s License.
  • High School Diploma or equivalency.
  • Two years of experience in bylaw enforcement, compliance monitoring, municipal regulations, or related field work.
  • Knowledge of Alberta provincial legislation relevant to municipal enforcement and local bylaw application.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills for accurate documentation and public interactions.
  • Ability to interpret and apply policies, regulations, and bylaws consistently and fairly.
  • Proficiency with computer systems and database entry for record-keeping and reporting.
  • Demonstrated conflict resolution and de-escalation skills.

Responsibilities

  • Perform foot patrols to monitor bylaw compliance.
  • Issue citations, warnings, and enforcement notices.
  • Document observations and enforcement actions in municipal databases.
  • Respond to public complaints and inquiries regarding bylaw violations.
  • Review bylaws and apply legislation accurately.
  • Provide clear explanations to the public about requirements and violations.
  • Maintain detailed reports and records for potential court proceedings.
