Job summary

RWDI in Guelph, ON seeks a Contract Model Shop Technician for a 12-month call-in role. You will manage model storage, use 3D printers and prototyping tools, and build physical/electronic models from 2D/3D drawings. Collaboration with engineers is essential to meet project needs.

Hours vary 20–40 per week; overtime may occur. An architectural/engineering tech or woodworking background with AutoCAD and SolidWorks is preferred. Probability of continuation depends on project demand.

Qualifications

  • High school or college diploma in architectural/engineering tech or woodworking.
  • Strong 3D conceptualization and ability to transfer skills between 3D programs.
  • Excellent attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Ability to use power/hand tools and read drawings.
  • Proactive problem solving and deadline-driven multitasking.

Responsibilities

  • Perform model storage, organization, and inventory tasks.
  • Operate shop equipment including 3D printers and rapid prototyping machines.
  • Assist with building physical or electronic models and prototypes.
  • Interpret 2D/3D drawings to conceive and construct models.
  • Collaborate with engineering team to resolve modeling issues.
  • Communicate project needs across the team and meet requirements.
  • Free-lift up to 40 lbs as part of physical tasks.

This is a 12 month call-in contract position, hours of work may vary from 20-40 hours per week and are not always guaranteed.

Key Responsibilities
  • Perform model storage, organization, handling, and inventory tasks to support the efficient operation of the shop
  • Operating a variety of equipment, mainly shop equipment and hand tools, such as 3D printers, rapid prototyping machines, cameras, computers, and software (e.g. drawing)
  • Support with building physical or electronic models and prototypes
  • Deciphering information from 2D and 3D drawing files, sketches, photos, and maps to conceive and construct models
  • Participating in the planning and coordination of projects
  • Collaborating with the engineering team to problem-solve modeling issues
  • Ensuring the project requirements are being fulfilled through ongoing communication with the project team
  • Physical demands of the job include the ability to free-lift up to 40 lbs
Skills, Knowledge & Expertise
  • High school diploma and/or college diploma in architectural or engineering technology and/or woodworking diploma
  • An aptitude for 3D conceptualization and the ability to transfer 3D skills between 3D programs. A high proficiency in computer applications with extensive knowledge of AutoCAD and work experience in SolidWorks
  • Excellent attention to detail with a high level of accuracy
  • The ability to use various power/hand tools
  • Demonstrated initiative, and independent problem-solving methods/capabilities
  • Proven ability to successfully meet deadlines and manage several projects at once, by accurately prioritizing tasks
  • Ability to change tasks and priorities on short notice
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Strong people and team skills as well as highly motivated
