Job summary

The New Afton concentrator at New Gold Inc. seeks a Metallurgist to advance safety-driven improvements in grinding, flotation, and dewatering circuits. You will contribute to forecasts, financial models, and reliability targets while supporting operations and maintenance teams.

Ideal candidates bring a mining/metallurgical engineering background, experience in mineral processing, and familiarity with JK SimMet, Excel, and process control. Relocation may be required to Kamloops area.

Qualifications

• Degree in Mining, Mineral Processing, Metallurgical or Chemical Engineering.
• Minimum one year experience in the mineral processing field; co-op experience may be included.
• Strong problem-solving skills with an emphasis on safety.
• Registered or eligible to register with EGBC.
• Previous experience in gold and/or base metal processing plant(s).
• Experience with process control, expert systems and/or machine learning.
• Experience in optimization of SAG milling and/or flotation circuits.
• Experience using JK SimMet or similar balancing/simulation software.
• Involvement in technical/professional associations and conferences.
• Experience working as part of a mill operations crew.

Situated 10 kilometers west of Kamloops, British Columbia, the New Afton Mine is an underground gold and copper producing site.

Position Reports To: Metallurgical Superintendent

Position Overview:The New Afton concentrator is recruiting for a Metallurgist.

Key Responsibilities

• Putting safety first in the planning and execution of all works;
• Identifying, evaluating, and coordinating execution of operational and/or capital projects to improve product quality and process efficiency;
• Providing timely and accurate metallurgical accounting information;
• Completing production forecasting and financial models;
• Supporting operations and maintenance teams in improving concentrator performance and reliability;
• Interpreting and applying mineralogical data;
• Designing and executing test programs to optimize gravity, grinding, flotation, concentrate dewatering and tailings dewatering circuit performance.

Qualifications

Required:

• Degree in Mining, Mineral Processing, Metallurgical or Chemical Engineering
• Minimum one year experience in the mineral processing field. Relevant co-op experience may be included.
• Strong problem-solving skills and an emphasis on safety
• Ability to both lead teams and be a contributing team member
• High level of proficiency in MS Excel
• Registered or eligible to register with EGBC
• Previous experience in gold and/or base metal processing plant(s)
• Experience with process control, expert systems and/or machine learning
• Experience in optimization of SAG milling and/or flotation circuits
• Experience using JK SimMet or similar balancing/simulation software
• Involvement in technical/professional associations and conferences
• Experience working as part of a mill operations crew

Other Requirements

Candidates will be required to participate in a comprehensive qualification process, including:

• Completion of pre-placement functional screen
• Provide proof of a valid Class 5 driver’s license
• Demonstrate eligibility to work in Canada
• Provide confirmation of valid educational requirements

Compensation

The anticipated salary for this position will be between $85,000 and $110,000. A comprehensive benefits program and performance bonus plan will also be provided. This is not a camp operation and therefore the successful candidate will be required to relocate to the Kamloops area or travel and accommodation will be the responsibility of the successful applicant.
