Job summary

Job Summary

Under the direction of the Head of Metadata and reporting to the Metadata Supervisor (Cataloguing), the Metadata Assistant carries out resource description on material covering a wide variety of subjects, languages, and formats to enable discovery of library resources. This involves the creation of MARC and BIBFRAME authority and bibliographic records, the assignment of subject headings and classification numbers, and may include the creation of metadata for digital objects. The incumbent will provide cataloguing and metadata services for analogue and digital objects within the Library’s Alma Library Services Platform (LSP), DSpace (UVicSpace institutional repository) and Samvera digital library and other systems as needed.

Job Requirements

Experience:
This position requires a level of education, training, and experience equivalent to a minimum of 2 years’ experience working within a comparable environment, preferably in a post-secondary or institutional environment or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

• Knowledge of cataloguing and/or metadata standards employed in an academic environment (e.g. MARC21, RDA, CONSER, LCSH, LCC, DDC, Dublin Core, etc.)
• Knowledge of efficient searching and use of cataloguing and metadata online tools and databases (e.g. OCLC, Library of Congress cataloguing resources, etc.)
• Excellent organizational skills including attention to detail, time management, and ability to multi-task in a fast-paced environment
• Excellent communication skills (both oral and written)
• Ability to work independently and within a team environment in a professional and conscientious manner
• Willingness to take initiative and solve problems with limited supervision
• Ability to follow international and local policy and procedures
• Excellent analytical and research skills
• Ease with using technology and enthusiasm for applying technology to solve problems
• Excellent organizational skills
• Flexibility and willingness to adapt to new ideas and concepts
• Advanced proficiency with computer applications (i.e. MS-Office Suite, content management systems)

Specialized knowledge/education
Secondary school diploma or equivalent.

Assets/Preferences

• Experience working with library and/or digital asset management systems
• Experience editing and creating bibliographic and authority records according to local and international standards and procedures preferred
• Knowledge of Integrated Library Systems or Library Services Platforms
• Knowledge of at least one language other than English
• Experience reading and/or performing music preferred
• Bachelor’s degree in any discipline, or some post-secondary education
