Job summary

YWCA Hamilton is seeking a full-time Mental Health Specialist to support women, gender-diverse people, and families in navigating mental health and wellbeing needs at our Hamilton site. Start date is to be determined, with a 37.5-hour work week and occasional evenings or weekends.

You will provide trauma-informed, wrap-around care, coordinate services, and help develop wellness plans while maintaining confidential records in a feminist, anti-racist framework.

Qualifications

  • Completion of social service diploma or social work degree.
  • 3-5 years’ experience in crisis intervention and trauma-informed care.
  • Ability to communicate with diverse clients and apply a strengths-based approach.
  • Proficiency with MS Office and data collection software.
  • Vulnerable Sector Check and First Aid/CPR required or willing to obtain.

Responsibilities

  • Supports women, non-binary and gender diverse individuals experiencing poverty, homelessness, and gendered violence in navigating mental health and wellbeing needs.
  • Provides wrap-around trauma-informed, responsive care to improve coping, wellness planning, crisis management and service integration.
  • Conducts regular individual and group support sessions with a focus on holistic wellness and resiliency.
  • Coordinates mental health services aligned with treatment plans, including consultation and follow-up.
  • Maintains confidential records and ensures timely data entry and documentation.

Responsibilities

Supports women (Trans and cis), non-binary, and gender diverse persons experiencing poverty, homelessness, and gendered violence in navigating their mental health and wellbeing needs for the duration of service. Provides wrap around trauma informed, responsive care that aims to increase service users coping, wellness planning, crisis management and service integration needed to enhance quality of life and promote healing and wellness.

Key Responsibilities
  • Responsive and trauma informed crisis intervention to support de-escalation in the moment; works to model and integrate tools to increase capacity for service users’ regulation and coping;
  • Provides regular individual and group support offerings, with content that is service user informed and focused on connection, holistic wellness and resiliency utilizing a range of therapeutic, recreational and arts-based modalities;
  • Ensuring the development of comprehensive and appropriate wellness / treatment plan recommendations regarding mental health counselling are provided in the initial assessment;
  • Coordinating the provision of mental health services in line with treatment plan to clients including consultation, assessment, therapeutic support and follow-up for all clients relevant to the service in accordance with the agency’s mandate, policies and procedures;
  • Monitoring and evaluating service delivery and mental health counselling progress of service users;
  • Linking clients with health, harm reduction and psychiatric services as necessary in line with treatment plan;
  • Provides on-going input and feedback of possible interventions and internal/external service options;
  • Ensuring necessary collaboration with community resources and advocacy occurs with or on behalf of assigned clients;
  • Participating constructively and appropriately in short- and long-term planning for the clients of the mental health program;
  • Available for case consultation to assess needs, interventions and supports as needed;
  • Provides accompaniment/direct support to liaise with service options as necessary to support sustained access to care providers identified to be a part of circle of care;
  • Supports learning across the agency;
  • Regular Case Conferencing and updates to primary support team as it relates to wellbeing / wellness plan updates for service users;
  • Shares information in a timely manner;
  • Maintains appropriate and accurate record keeping (documentation/reports) including safe storage of confidential information, timely data entry, and objective case noting, in accordance with YWCA’s policies and procedures;
  • Provides recommendations to strengthen existing policies and/or processes;
  • Maintains high level of confidentiality and privacy when working with client information;
  • Participates in mandatory organizational and departmental training and meetings;
  • Understands emerging trends, leading practices, industry professional standards;
  • Develops and nurtures meaningful internal and external working relationships with service teams and partnerships;
  • Supports YWCA’s mission, vision and values;
  • Performs other duties as required.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
  • Full time; Works 37.5 hours work week;
  • Occasional evenings and weekends may be required.
Qualifications
  • Completion of social service diploma, social work degree or related/relevant combination of education and experience;
  • Minimum of 3-5 years’ experience in crisis intervention, trauma informed care and providing holistic care within the social determinants of health framework (how social, economic, and political factors such as income, education, occupation, gender, race, and ethnicity influence a person's socioeconomic position which, in turn, plays a role in determining health outcomes);
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate, engage, and build strong therapeutic relationships with complex clients and commitment to empowering women and gender-diverse individuals through a flexible, strengths-based approach;
  • Must have skills using MS Office programs including Excel, Word and program specific data collection/documentation software;
  • Ability to maintain a positive and professional approach at all times;
  • Must provide a current Vulnerable Sector Police Check or willing to obtain at own cost;
  • Must have current Standard First Aid and CPR C certificate or willing to obtain at own cost;
  • Ability to work as part of a multi-disciplinary organization;
  • Must be able to work from a feminist, anti-racist/ anti-oppressive perspective and harm reduction framework;
  • Bilingual English/French or other languages an asset.
