Job summary

Interior Health is seeking a Medical Laboratory Assistant for East Kootenay Regional Hospital in Cranbrook, BC. The role focuses on specimen collection, preparation, routine testing, LIS data entry, and ECG testing in a busy lab setting.

Permanent part-time (0.50) with rotating evening shifts from 12:00 to 20:00. Ideal candidates have Grade 12, a recognized Lab Assistant program, and relevant experience.

Qualifications

  • Grade 12 plus recognized Laboratory Assistant training and 1 year of related experience, or equivalent
  • Must have Canadian Driver's License as required by position
  • Typing test: 25 WPM with a 5-minute timed test from approved institution

Responsibilities

  • Take blood and specimen samples from patients
  • Prepare blood and other specimens for analysis
  • Perform routine laboratory tests
  • Distribute specimens to departments and external labs
  • Operate related equipment and enter data into LIS
  • Perform related clerical duties and ECG testing as required

About the Job

East Kootenay Regional Hospital is a 75 bed acute care hospital with a medium size Laboratory offering Core Lab, Microbiology, Histology, Pathology, collections and accession services. It is considered a regional referral site for selected testing and there are 30 Medical Laboratory Technologists, and 25 Medical Laboratory Assistants employed in various disciplines.

Medical Laboratory Assistants perform a variety of duties such as taking blood and specimen samples from patients, preparing blood and other specimens for analysis, performing routine laboratory tests, distributing specimens to departments and outside Laboratories, operating related equipment, entering data into the Laboratory Information Systems (LIS) and performing related clerical duties and ECG testing as required.

This is a Permanent Part Time (0.50) opportunity.

Shifts of work will be scheduled rotating evenings from 12:00 to 20:00 hours.

Qualfications
  • Grade 12, successful completion of a recognized Laboratory Assistant training program, plus one year's recent, related experience or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience
  • Canadian Driver’s License as required by position
  • Ability to type 25 WPM *5 minute invigilated typing test dated within the past 48 months from an approved institution. Please note we do not accept self-administered online tests*
