Job summary

Lookout Housing and Health Society is seeking a Medical Care Aide to support guests with complex needs in a residential setting, following Lookout’s ethics and ensuring respectful, dignified personal supports for activities of daily living and instrumental activities of daily living.

Under the direction of the Program Manager, you will assist with meals, medication administration, and daily logs, while adhering to health and safety policies.

Qualifications

• Recent, related experience of at least one (1) year / an equivalent combination of education, training and experience / 2 years in a residential care/mental health setting including community work experience / other qualifications determined to be reasonable and relevant to the work
• Care Aide Certificate and BC Care Aide Registration are required
• Current Occupational First Aid Level 1 Certificate is required
• Food Safe certification is required
• Crisis Intervention Skills Training is required
• Naloxone Training is required
• A minimum of two (2) years of sobriety if you have had concerns related to alcohol and/or drug use
• Criminal Record Clearance – Vulnerable Sector is required

Responsibilities

• Receives requests for emergency relief coverage and coordinates relief staff per policy and collective agreement.
• Inputs casual availability updates into the staff database and tracks changes.
• Performs record management such as call records and attendance.
• Communicates with staff by phone and email regarding relief and updates.
• Gathers and compiles information as required.
• Assists guests with activities of daily living, including meals, transfers, bathing and hygiene.
• Assists with instrumental daily living activities such as cleaning, laundry and organizing supplies.
• Follows care plans and policies; documents observations and progress.
• Provides input on guest needs and health-related progress.
• Plans, prepares and serves meals and shops for groceries.
• Administers medications per established policy and provides reminders.
• Maintains records and daily logs; participates in guest-focused activities.

Days and Hours of work

7 days a week, day, afternoon/evening and overnight shifts, weekdays, weekends and holidays
Shifts are 7.5 hours in length
Days of rest shall be consecutive. Schedule may change with two weeks’ notice
Probationary/qualifying period will be 488 hours with mid and end point reviews

$29.62 - 31.40 depending upon applicants' length of seniority (as per the Collective Agreement)

Job Summary

Under the direction of the Program Manager or designate, the Medical Care Aide will provide support to guests with complex needs who may be experiencing deteriorating physical health, in accordance with the mission and philosophy of Lookout Housing and Health Society, including following Lookout’s Code of Ethics. The Medical Care Aide will ensure respectful and dignified personalized supports for varying levels of required care including activities of daily living and instrumental activities of daily living in a residential setting, ultimately supporting individuals to age in place as desired.

This position requires successful completion of respirator fit testing, as Lookout is COR (Certificate of Recognition) certified and must comply with WorkSafeBC health and safety requirements. To ensure a proper respirator seal during fit testing and use, employees are required to be clean-shaven where the respirator seals against the face.

Job Duties

• Receives requests for emergency relief coverage, allocates and calls in relief staff to fill vacancies resulting from unfilled positions, in accordance with Lookout’s Casual Availability Policy and Procedure and the Collective Agreement
• Inputs casual availability updates into employee database (Success Factors) and tracks any changes by running reports and notifying Site Manager or designate
• Performs record management such as call records and attendance records as related to casual staff
• Corresponds to staff directly during telephone callouts and conversations as well as corresponds electronically through email
• Gathers and compiles information as required
• Assists guests with their activities of daily living such as feeding, transferring in an out of a bed or chair, bathing, skin care, oral hygiene and toileting.
• Assists guests with their instrumental activities of daily living such as cleaning and sanitizing personal spaces, changing and making beds, doing laundry, keeping various personal supplies organized and stocked.
• Follows care plans and leadership directives according to policies and procedures.
• Documents observations and activities as appropriate to the guests care plan.
• Provides feedback and input regarding guest needs and progress, with a heavy emphasis on medical needs.
• Plans, prepares and serves meals, and shops for groceries.
• Administers medication to clients and provides medication reminders, in accordance with established policy.
• Completes and maintains records and documentation related to the operations, such as statistics, progress reports, and daily logs.
• Participates in, and contributes to various guest-focused social and recreational activities. May include the accompaniment of clients to shopping, appointments or leisure activities.
• Supports staff, students and volunteers as appropriate.
• Responsible for complying with and contributing to all aspects of health and safety program
• Employees are expected to remain alert and attentive during working hours. Sleeping during shifts is not permitted.
• Performs other duties as required.
