Job summary

Lookout Housing and Health Society in Vancouver, BC, is seeking an Outreach Worker to provide support, advocacy and connection to services for adults facing housing instability and related challenges. You will help clients secure stable living situations, assess needs, coordinate with community resources, and document activities while following Lookout’s ethics and safety standards.

Qualifications

  • Diploma or certificate related to social services, or Grade 12 with two years of related experience.
  • Familiarity with community resources for addiction, mental health, welfare and harm reduction.
  • Current Occupational First Aid Level 1 and a Class 5 Driver’s Licence with Driver’s Abstract.
  • Crisis Intervention Skills Training is an asset.
  • Ability to work independently or in a team and manage stressful workload.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication and organizational skills.
  • Must understand boundaries with clients and demonstrate sobriety where applicable.
  • Criminal Record Clearance – Vulnerable Sector.

Responsibilities

  • Provide assistance, support and skills training to adults to establish and maintain stable living situations.
  • Work on securing and maintaining stable living situations for clients.
  • Discuss, assess problems and develop flexible action plans.
  • Network clients with needed services and provide crisis intervention as necessary.
  • Complete required records and maintain statistical data.
  • Aid in training and upgrading of staff and volunteers.
  • May drive company vehicle as needed.

Days and Hours of work

7 days a week, day, afternoon/evening and overnight shifts, weekdays, weekends and holidays

Shifts are 7.5 hours in length

Days of rest shall be consecutive. Schedule may change with two weeks’ notice

Probationary/qualifying period will be 488 hours with mid and end point reviews

Salary

$33.49 - 35.31 depending upon applicants' length of seniority (as per the Collective Agreement)

Job Summary

The Outreach Worker reports to the Designated Manager and works in accordance with the mission and philosophy of Lookout Housing and Health Society including following Lookout’s Code of Ethics. Outreach workers provide a variety of support, direction, assistance and advocacy services to clients including, but not limited to, those facing challenges with stable housing, addictions, mental health, HIV etc. The Outreach Worker provides support and advocacy for treatment and follow up services for those who do not adequately utilize needed services.

This position requires successful completion of respirator fit testing, as Lookout is COR (Certificate of Recognition) certified and must comply with WorkSafeBC health and safety requirements. To ensure a proper respirator seal during fit testing and use, employees are required to be clean-shaven where the respirator seals against the face.

Job Duties
  • To provide assistance, support and skills training to adults in order to establish and maintain stable living situations as independently as possible
  • Will work on securing and maintaining stable, independent living situations where possible
  • Will discuss, isolate and assess problems, and develop a flexible plan of action
  • Will ensure basic needs are met by networking clientele with needed services, providing crisis intervention as necessary, and administering finances and medications or arranging coverage
  • Will provide crisis intervention as necessary, administer finances and medications or arrange coverage
  • Complete required records and maintain statistical data
  • Aid in the training and upgrading of placement programs for staff, volunteers and students
  • Will drive company vehicle at times
  • Job duties are complex and may have a few disagreeable factors
  • Employees are expected to remain alert and attentive during working hours. Sleeping during shifts is not permitted
  • Responsible for complying with and contributing to all aspects of health and safety program
Qualifications & Competence
  • Related Diploma or Certificate; or minimum Grade 12 education plus two (2) years of recent related experience; or equivalent combination of education, training and experience; and prefer a minimum of one (1) year case management experience
  • Familiarity with community resources; particularly addiction, mental health, welfare, and harm reduction
  • Must have current Occupational First Aid Level 1 Certificate and a Class 5 Driver’s Licence and Driver’s Abstract
  • Crisis Intervention Skills Training is an asset
  • Ability to work independently or in a team setting
  • Strong ability to manage stress and organize workload
  • Excellent communication, writing, documentation, and organizational skills
  • Understands and maintains clientele/worker boundaries
  • Ability to work with disadvantaged and challenging adults in a diverse environment
  • Strong physical and mental ability to perform work tasks and operate job related equipment
  • A minimum two (2) years of sobriety if you have had concerns related to alcohol and/or drug use
  • Criminal Record Clearance – Vulnerable Sector
