Job summary

Nucleon Energy is seeking a Mechatronics & Robotics Engineer to design and develop automated material-handling systems for a UF6 conversion facility in Calgary. You will integrate mechanical design, robotics, instrumentation and industrial controls to handle hazardous uranium compounds with a focus on safety and reliability.

Qualifications

  • Requires a degree in mechatronics, mechanical, electrical, robotics or a closely related engineering discipline.
  • Approximately five or more years of experience in industrial automation, robotic systems or complex electromechanical equipment.
  • Involvement in taking equipment from concept through fabrication, testing, integration or commissioning.
  • Strong mechanical aptitude with actuators, sensors, motion systems and interfaces.
  • Experience with industrial controls, including PLC-based systems and machine/robot controllers.
  • Proficiency with engineering CAD tools and fabrication-ready designs.
  • Understanding of machinery safety, failure modes, maintainability and rigorous testing.
  • Ability to work across engineering disciplines and communicate with suppliers, fabricators and operators.
  • Professional engineering registration, or eligibility, appropriate to the role.

Responsibilities

  • Identify opportunities for automation and remote handling to improve safety and efficiency.
  • Develop equipment concepts, requirements, sequences and interfaces with the facility.
  • Design and integrate mechanical assemblies, actuators, sensors, end effectors and motion-control systems.
  • Evaluate robotic, fixed-automation, remote and manual approaches per application needs.
  • Coordinate with process and safety teams on containment, material compatibility and recovery.
  • Define safe operating states, fault detection and interlocks with controls and safety teams.
  • Build or coordinate prototypes and test rigs to validate methods and reliability.
  • Prepare technical specs and evaluate suppliers and system integrators.
  • Support design reviews, risk assessments, testing, installation and commissioning.
  • Create clear documentation including design rationale and maintenance guidance.
