Job summary

D.F. Barnes Limited is seeking a Mechanical Supervisor to lead mechanical maintenance and installation activities. You will oversee field and shop personnel, coordinate priorities, and ensure safety, quality, and client requirements are met.

Reporting to the General Foreman, you will guide 5–20 team members including Red Seal Journeypersons and Apprentices on projects, while driving productivity and continuous improvement across operations.

Qualifications

  • Red Seal Certification in a relevant trade is mandatory.
  • Minimum 5 years of trade experience and 2 years of leadership experience.
  • Secondary trade experience in electrical, welding, fabrication, or related discipline is an asset.
  • Strong knowledge of marine and industrial maintenance practices.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office and digital maintenance systems.
  • Excellent organizational, communication, and leadership skills.
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain Canadian Security Clearance.

Responsibilities

  • Provide advanced troubleshooting support for complex mechanical issues.
  • Monitor productivity, quality, and project performance.
  • Approve timesheets, work orders, and maintenance documentation.
  • Coordinate equipment, material, and tool requirements.
  • Support estimating, planning, and project execution activities.
  • Participate in continuous improvement initiatives.

Position Summary

The Mechanical Supervisor is responsible for the safe, efficient, and profitable execution of mechanical maintenance, repair, fabrication, installation, and inspection activities. Reporting directly to the General Foreman, the Mechanical Supervisor provides hands‑on leadership to field and shop personnel while ensuring compliance with safety, quality, and client requirements. This role serves as the primary link between operations, customers, and trades personnel and is accountable for workforce productivity, service quality, and continuous improvement.

Reporting Structure & Direct Reports

Reports to: General

Direct Reports: Typically supervises 5–20 employees, including Red Seal Journeypersons, Apprentices, Labourers, and Contractors as required.

Provides mentorship, coaching, performance management, and development support to all direct reports.

Key Responsibilities

  • Recommends disciplinary actions when necessary.
  • Authorized to assign work, adjust schedules, and prioritize operational requirements.
  • Supports purchasing activities by providing recommendations and administering approved budgets and expenditures.

  • Safety performance and participation in the Act of Vigilance program.
  • Total Recordable Incident Rate (TRIR) and near-miss reporting.
  • Schedule adherence and on‑time completion of work.
  • Labour utilization and workforce productivity.

  • Rework rates and quality compliance.
  • Equipment uptime and maintenance effectiveness.
  • Employee development and apprenticeship progression.

On-Call & Travel Requirements
  • Participation in an on‑call rotation may be required.
  • Must be available for emergency response, shutdowns, and unplanned maintenance events.
  • Regular local travel to customer sites.
  • Occasional out‑of‑province travel required.

Work Schedule

Monday to Friday, 7:30 AM to 4:00 PM. Overtime, evenings, weekends, and holiday work may be required to meet operational and customer requirements
