MECHANICAL ENGINEER (14-month term)

About the Role:

W e are seeking a full-time Mechanical Engineer to join our engineering team on a contract term basis.

Reporting to the Director of Engineering, the Mechanical Engineer will lead the mechanical design process to deliver component, product, and system designs that are innovative and cost-effective, as well as manage the development and improvement of mechanical engineering processes, tools, and capabilities. The engineering team is responsible for on-time delivery of quality products while ensuring that customer requirements are met. You will be hands-on and lead mechanical engineering activities including requirements solicitation and generation, design to requirements, testing, verification/validation, and acceptance testing.

MetOcean products are centered around embedded devices that are integrated into systems and protected by mechanical housings. We are highly reliant on high-quality and reliable mechanical designs. A solid background in new product development and experience in leading designs through the complete system engineering lifecycle is key to this role.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Deliver mechanical designs to scope, budget, and schedule.
  • Use SolidWorks to incorporate PCBAs, machined components, injection-molded plastics, and 3D printed parts, with considerations for cost, mechanical integrity, manufacturability, and assembly.
  • Perform mechanical tests for product verification.
  • Design jigs and fixtures for manufacturing/production.
  • Develop manufacturing assembly procedures and help in failure investigations.
  • Create, review, and update engineering documentation.
  • Incorporate engineering changes into existing designs.
  • Manage end-to-end mechanical engineering projects of varying size and scope.
  • Lead and own mechanical design efforts against product requirements.
  • Ownership of mechanical product designs from concept through production and to end of life.
  • Develop and manage the mechanical environmental testing.
  • Participate in and organize the mechanical design reviews and own the final mechanical deliverables.
  • Work across multiple functional teams to ensure the most effective project outcome.
  • Understand, generate, and deliver on the complete mechanical requirements for commercially available products.
  • Other duties, as assigned.

Technical and Non-Technical Skills:

  • Proficient in CAD software (e.g., SolidWorks, AutoCAD).
  • Knowledge of finite element analysis (FEA) and computational fluid dynamics (CFD).
  • Knowledge of materials science and engineering.
  • Familiar with manufacturing processes, including machining, injection molding, and additive manufacturing.
  • Knowledge of mechanical and thermal systems.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to troubleshoot and resolve complex issues.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to present technical information clearly and concisely.
  • Proven ability to work effectively in a team-oriented environment.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite and engineering analysis software.

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s or master’s degree in mechanical engineering or a related field.
  • 4+ years of experience in mechanical engineering, preferably in new product design and development.
  • Experience in discipline ownership of projects from concept to production, including scheduling, budgeting, and resource allocation.
  • Professional Engineer in good standing, or eligible for a license to practice engineering in Nova Scotia.
