Job summary

3GA Marine Ltd. in Victoria, BC is seeking a Marine Mechanical Engineer to support design and vessel refit projects, balancing office work with on-site inspections. The role covers concept to production design, 3D modelling, and drafting of marine systems.

Candidates should have a Bachelor’s degree in engineering, EIT or P.Eng eligibility, and experience in shipyards. Travel to vessels and shipyards is expected, with emphasis on safety, quality, and regulatory compliance.

  • Design of marine propulsion systems, calculations, and associated production-level deliverables.
  • Write and provide input to specifications for refit or new vessel designs.
  • Development of weight estimates and input data for system design.
  • 3D modelling and CAD drawing tasks for production-level deliverables.
  • Perform 3D scanning and implementation of virtual reality (VR) design reviews, provide input to training and VR procedures.
  • Providing input to budgets, schedules, and proposals for engineering projects.
  • Represent the company to the marine industry to further build the 3GA reputation as the place for reliable, responsive, and affordable engineering.
  • Note: it is anticipated that the candidate will be required to visit vessels and shipyards from time to time.

Job description

Please note: This is primarily an office-based marine mechanical engineering and design role, though work will vary from office to on-site. Occasional vessel and shipyard visits are anticipated for inspections, 3D laser scanning, condition surveys, data gathering, and commissioning support. We are hiring at all levels — Junior, Intermediate, and Senior — with responsibilities aligned to the candidate’s experience.

3GA Marine is a partnership of marine professionals providing engineering, project support, surveying, and consulting services to the Canadian marine industry. With offices in Victoria and Burnaby, we are a full-service naval architecture and marine engineering company delivering practical, turnkey solutions throughout the lifecycle of a vessel. Our work includes engineered solutions for new vessel designs and vessel refits, from concept through implementation. Projects vary in complexity and scale, from small equipment installations to detailed whole-vessel designs.

Position Overview

As the Marine Mechanical Engineer, you will work within the mechanical engineering group for new design and vessel refit projects which vary in complexity and size, from small equipment installations to whole-vessel detail designs. Work will vary from on-site to office work. On-site inspection/survey work will consist of 3D laser scanning, condition inspections, NDT surveys, data gathering, and commissioning support. Design office work will make up most of the tasks and will consist of new design to refit design engineering work. Engineering work includes all phases, from concept to production design, including but not limited to concept/class level design, equipment selection, fluid flow analysis, heat/mass transfer, and implementation engineering.

Education and Experience
  • Bachelor’s Degree in engineering or equivalent.
  • Hold, or be eligible for, EIT or Professional Engineers License to practice in British Columbia. (P.Eng. required for senior engineer position.)
  • Experience working in a shipyard or ship repair environment preferred.
Skills, Knowledge and Required Competencies
  • Demonstrated a high degree of technical knowledge and innovative engineering.
  • Demonstrated effective abilities to work in a team-oriented environment.
  • Strong technical writing skills to produce concise written technical specifications, procedures, and reports. Excellent oral and written communication and presentation skills.
  • Strong design and drafting skills for marine systems.
  • Working knowledge of 3D CAD software such as Rhinoceros 3D, SolidWorks, or ANSYS, etc.
  • Working knowledge of ShipConstructor an asset.
  • Working knowledge of ACAD software and Microsoft Office software suite.
  • Availability and willingness to travel and conduct ship survey work including surveying of confined spaces.
  • Committed to a high standard of safety and compliance with all safety laws.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Good judgment and prioritization abilities.

Compensation, Requirements & Location

Salary Range
$70,000 – $105,000 CAD
Junior to intermediate-level hiring range, depending on relevant marine engineering background, design capabilities, software proficiency, and overall fit. Senior Marine Engineer candidates will be considered at a higher hiring rate, commensurate with experience and qualifications. Includes eligibility for overtime, benefits, training, and profit sharing based on company and individual performance.

In a senior capacity, this role is expected to positively influence team outcomes by strengthening technical consistency, supporting efficient project execution, improving collaboration across disciplines, and helping the team deliver high-quality work on schedule.
