Job summary

LB Foster is seeking a Mechanical Engineer to design and develop onboard train-mounted mechanical and electro‑mechanical hardware. You will conceptualize, design, verify, validate, manufacture and implement systems for rail applications.

You will also create detailed designs, perform FEA validation, generate manufacturing drawings, support QA, and coordinate field trials with stakeholders while traveling up to 25% as needed.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics or related discipline.
  • EIT with EGBC or eligible for registration.
  • 2–4 years in mechanical/electro-mechanical design; railroad experience is an asset.
  • CAD modelling with SolidWorks preferred; FEA experience is an asset.
  • Experience with electro‑mechanical systems including automation and instrumentation; PLC experience is an asset.
  • Willingness to travel up to 25% nationally and internationally; occasional evenings/weekends.

Responsibilities

Who You Are…

You will play a key role in LB Foster's Friction Management division, where you will be responsible for the design and development of custom mechanical and electro-mechanical hardware specifically related to onboard train-mounted solutions. This work includes conceptualization, design, verification, validation, manufacture, and systems implementation. Essential functions include but are not limited to the following:

  • Developing conceptual and detailed designs of customer mechanical and electro-mechanical systems for train-mounted applications.
  • Conducting design validation and verification using FEA modelling, prototyping, and field assessment.
  • Developing design/component specifications and generate manufacturing drawings.
  • Supporting manufacturing and conduct QA.
  • Generating trial plans, reports, manuals, and other documents.
  • Coordinating and participate in trials, installations, and test of equipment in the field.
  • Interfacing with internal and external clients/stakeholders.
  • Designing and conducting experiments and perform data acquisition and analysis.
What Do You Need…
  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics Engineering, or related discipline.
  • EIT with EGBC or eligible for registration.
  • 2 to 4 years of experience in mechanical and electro-mechanical design. Experience in the railroad industry an asset.
  • Proficiency with CAD modelling (SolidWorks preferred). FEA experience an asset.
  • Experience with electro-mechanical systems an asset, including automation, control systems, and instrumentation. PLC experience an asset.
  • Ability to travel up to 25% of the time to various national and international locations.
  • Ability to work evenings and weekends as required.
