Job summary

Innovative Automation Inc. in Barrie, Ontario, is seeking Intermediate & Senior Mechanical Designers to turn customer ideas into industry-leading automation.

You will collaborate with Sales and Vendors, develop 3D CAD models in SolidWorks, review designs for manufacturability, and mentor junior designers while driving safety and continuous improvement.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor or diploma in mechanical engineering or equivalent experience.
  • 5+ years designing Industrial Automation custom machinery with leadership experience.
  • 5+ years of design experience with SolidWorks.
  • Good understanding of Assembly processes including welding, dispensing, pressing, fastening, material handling.
  • Good understanding of GD&T, ASME Y14.5.
  • Experience conducting Machine Safety Risk Assessments.
  • Strong communication, presentation, organizational, and problem-solving skills; team player.

Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with Sales team and Customer to understand project requirements and machine concepts.
  • Work directly with vendors to verify component selections.
  • Provide design solutions for custom, non-standard equipment and develop 3D CAD models using engineering theory.
  • Delegate duties and coordinate the design process with Junior and Contractor resources (up to 10).
  • Review designs for scope, functionality, manufacturability.
  • Meet with Project Manager to ensure deliverables meet schedule and scope.
  • Conduct design reviews with customers prior to manufacturing.
  • Identify machine safety items and provide design direction per safety codes.
  • Create safe stop distance calculations for PSSD.
  • Lead or support Machine Safety Risk Assessments.
  • Prepare detailed drawings per IA standards; update as development completes.
  • Contribute ideas for continuous improvement; mentor junior designers.

Job Opportunity:

We are looking for Intermediate & Senior Mechanical Designers. There are 2 existing vacancies. Our designers take customer ideas and specifications to generate industry leading solutions. Designers coordinate both the capital and investment tooling designs, with a focus on process feasibility, safety, a machinability. Innovative is looking to expand our design team, with individuals who tackle technical challenges head on and enjoy working within a team environment.

What you'll do:
  • Collaborate with Sales team and Customer to understand project requirements and machine concepts
  • Work directly with vendors to verify component selections
  • Provide design solutions for custom, non-standard equipment. Develop sales concepts into detailed 3D CAD models using creative problem solving and application of engineering theory
  • Delegate duties and coordinate the design process with Junior, and Contractor resources., which could include up to 10 resources during the design phases of large-scale projects
  • Review designs of project team, checking for scope intent, functionality, simplicity, and manufacturability
  • Meet with Project Manager and team members to ensure project deliverables are tracking per schedule and scope
  • Conduct design reviews to customer for approval, prior to manufacturing
  • Identify Machine Safety items and provide design direction in accordance to relevant safety codes and principles.
  • Ability to complete safe stop distance calculations for PSSD's.
  • Ability to create and facilitate Machine Safety Risk Assessments with the Project team
  • Review or prepare detailed manufacturing component and assembly drawings per IA standards
  • Supervise or complete the creation of IO lists and drawings, along with Cycle Time charts for downstream departments
  • Supports Build team as required during the Assembly and Development of the equipment
  • Update designs and drawings upon development and project completion
  • Contribute ideas for Continuous Improvement projects that improve the departments operation and efficiency
  • Mentor and support Junior level mechanical designers
What you'll need:
  • Bachelor/Diploma in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent specialized experience
  • 5+ years of designing Industrial Automation custom machinery with combined leadership experience
  • 5+ years of design experience with SolidWorks
  • Good understanding of Assembly processes including but not limited to: Welding (Mig, Resistance, laser, etc.), Dispensing, Pressing, Fastening, Part feeding, Material handling, etc.
  • Good understand of GD&T, Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing, ASME Y14.5
  • Working knowledge and application of relevant Safety Codes
  • Experience conducting Machine Safety Risk Assessments
  • Strong communication, presentation, organizational, and problem-solving skillsTeam player: Ability to collaborate with others in various departments or roles to overcome challenges and find solutions
