Job summary

Kativik Regional Government is seeking a self-motivated Mechanic for the Metal Recycling project in Nunavik. The role repairs, maintains, and diagnoses heavy machinery and light-duty vehicles, ensuring safety and reliability in challenging Arctic conditions.

Reporting to the Residual Material Management Coordinator, you will develop maintenance routines, manage spare parts, and mentor junior staff while ensuring compliance with environmental standards.

Qualifications

  • DEP or equivalent in heavy equipment and light-duty vehicle mechanics.
  • Valid driver's license.
  • 3–5 years in heavy equipment (diesel) repair and light-duty vehicle mechanics.
  • Welding experience and occasional operation of heavy machinery.
  • Team-oriented with initiative and flexibility.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Proficient in at least two of English, French and Inuktitut; Inuktitut knowledge is an asset.
  • Willingness to travel in the Nunavik region; Northern experience is an asset.

Responsibilities

  • Repair, maintain, and diagnose heavy machinery and light-duty vehicles in metal recycling.
  • Ensure documentation of maintenance, service logs, and parts usage.
  • Maintain spare parts lists and procure parts as needed.
  • Prepare requisitions for spare parts via internal systems.
  • Develop and implement a preventive maintenance program.
  • Perform decontamination of end-of-life equipment following safety and environmental standards.
  • Assist in training and mentoring junior staff or apprentices.

JOB OPPORTUNITY

The Kativik Regional Government, a supra-municipal body having jurisdiction over the territory north of the 55 th parallel, notably provides technical assistance to the 14 villages of Nunavik. The KRG is currently looking for a self-motivated and dynamic individual to fill the following position:

MECHANIC - METAL RECYCLING
(Seasonal position)

Reporting to the Residual Material Management Coordinator, the Mechanic, Metal recycling Repair, maintain, and diagnose all heavy machinery equipment and light-duty vehicles used in the metal recycling project.

  • Repair, maintain and diagnose all heavy machinery and light-duty vehicles including but not limited to loader, excavator, tractor, telehandler, metal press, etc.
  • Ensure proper documentation of all maintenance and repair activities, including service logs, inspection reports, and parts usage.
  • Compile and maintain a list of spare parts and consumables required for the maintenance and repair of equipment and vehicles, ensuring timely annual or as-needed procurement.
  • Prepare requisitions for spare parts using the internal web-based application.
  • Collaborate with the metal recycling team to develop and implement a preventive maintenance program tailored to the equipment and vehicles in use.
  • Carry out operations related to the decontamination of end-of-life light-duty and heavy machinery vehicles as part of their decommissioning process and ensure compliance with safety protocols and environmental standards.
  • Assist in training and mentoring junior staff or apprentices, as required.
Requirements:
  • Possess a certificate of professional studies (DEP) in heavy equipment and light-duty vehicle mechanics or equivalent valid certification, relevant work experience will also be considered.
  • Possess a valid driver’s license
  • Three to five years of relevant work experience including heavy equipment (diesel) repair and light-duty vehicle mechanics;
  • Experience with related tasks such as welding and occasional operation of heavy machinery;
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively within a team environment;
  • Strong initiative, flexibility, and collaboration skills;
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite
  • Proficient in at least two of the following languages: Inuktitut, English, and French (written and spoken) (A working knowledge of Inuktitut will be considered an asset);
  • Available to travel in the Nunavik region; Occasional
  • Previous work experience in a Northern region will be considered an asset.

Place of employment: Nunavik

Salary: Min. $60 074 - Max. $102 839 a year (Class 9)
