Job summary

GEMTEC Consulting Engineers and Scientists Limited in Fredericton, NB is seeking a motivated Casual Materials Technician to join our team. You will collect samples, perform laboratory and field testing of concrete, asphalt, soils, and aggregates, and help assess material properties and quality for client projects.

The role requires a diploma or degree in Civil Engineering Technology, knowledge of ASTM/CSA standards, CCIL certifications, a valid driver’s license, and willingness to work outdoors

Qualifications

• Diploma or degree in Civil Engineering Technology, or a related field.
• Previous experience in materials testing and inspection is preferred.
• Knowledge of relevant testing methods and procedures, including ASTM and CSA standards.
• CCIL Certifications in testing of asphalt, concrete, aggregates, and soils.
• Must have a valid driver’s license and access to a reliable vehicle.

Responsibilities

• Collect samples and perform laboratory and field testing of construction materials (concrete, asphalt, soils, aggregates).
• Perform compaction testing of soil, aggregates, and asphalt concrete.
• Test fresh concrete/grout/mortar and prepare laboratory specimens; conduct site inspections and report results.
• Prepare detailed field reports for project managers and engineers.
• Maintain communication with project teams with updates on field activities and findings.
• Ensure compliance with relevant codes, regulations, and industry standards.
• Maintain and calibrate testing equipment for accuracy.
• Collaborate with project team to troubleshoot materials-related issues.

GEMTEC is a growing firm with offices throughout Atlantic Canada and in Ontario, and we are looking for a motivated and skilled Materials Technician to join our Team. We currently have an opening for a casual Materials Technician in our Fredericton, NB office. Hours will vary based on client needs.

Main Duties:

• Collect samples and perform laboratory and field testing of various construction materials, such as concrete, asphalt, soils, aggregates, etc., to determine material properties and quality.
• Compaction testing of soil, aggregates, and asphalt concrete;
• Testing of fresh concrete/grout/mortar and casting of laboratory specimens;Conduct inspections and assessments of construction sites, document findings and provide detailed reports on test results, including analysis and recommendations.
• Prepare detailed and accurate field reports for use by project managers and engineers.
• Maintain effective communication with project teams, providing regular updates on field activities and findings.
• Ensure compliance with relevant codes, regulations, and industry standards.
• Maintain and calibrate testing equipment, ensuring accuracy and reliability.
• Collaborate with the project team to troubleshoot and resolve any materials-related issues.
• Ability and willingness to work under varied weather conditions.
• Capability to walk and engage in fieldwork for extended periods across occasionally challenging terrain, as well as the ability to transport equipment and supplies weighing up to 40 pounds.
• Identify and mitigate potential hazards in the field, promoting a safe working environment.
