Job summary

Socket.dev is seeking a Bandsaw Operator to join our manufacturing team in Alberta. You will safely operate industrial bandsaws to cut metals to precise specifications outlined in work orders.

Responsibilities include staging materials, moving items with a forklift, and performing basic inventory checks and cycle counts. You will also ensure accurate tagging and traceability for quality compliance and perform routine maintenance with proper PPE.

Qualifications

  • 1–3 years of experience in manufacturing, heavy fabrication, or machine shop environments.
  • Direct experience operating industrial bandsaws is a strong asset.
  • Forklift operation experience is required; active certification preferred, training can be provided.
  • Basic computer literacy to navigate internal databases to check inventory levels.
  • Ability to read tape measures, use calipers, and follow blueprints or BOMs for precise cuts.
  • Strong mechanical aptitude, high attention to detail, proactive attitude.

Responsibilities

  • Operate horizontal/vertical bandsaws to cut raw metals, structural steel, piping, and tubing to exact specs from work orders.
  • Stage, kit, and distribute cut-to-length materials and components directly to manufacturing bays.
  • Safely operate forklift to move heavy materials between yards and cutting stations.
  • Monitor stock levels, perform cycle counts, and report shortages to procurement.
  • Use the internal system to check stock levels and part locations.
  • Ensure material tags, heat numbers, and heat codes are transferred to cut pieces for quality compliance.
  • Perform basic preventive maintenance on saws and wear appropriate PPE per HSE guidelines.

Job description

Core Responsibilities
  • Bandsaw Operation: Safely set up and operate industrial horizontal/vertical bandsaws to cut raw metals, structural steel, piping, and tubing to exact specifications outlined in work orders.
  • Shop Floor Supply & Kitting: Stage, kit, and distribute cut-to-length materials and specialized components (valves, fittings) directly to manufacturing bays to eliminate production downtime.
  • Material Movement (Forklift): Operate a forklift safely to transport heavy raw materials from outdoor storage yards and indoor racks to the cutting station and shop floor.
  • Internal Inventory Control: Monitor stock levels within shop storage and outdoor yards, perform regular cycle counts, and report material shortages to procurement
  • Basic Inventory Lookup: Use the company computer system strictly to check stock levels, verify part locations, and look up material availability.
  • Material Traceability: Ensure material tags, heat numbers, and heat codes are transferred accurately to cut pieces to maintain full oil and gas quality compliance.
  • Equipment Maintenance & Safety: Perform basic preventive maintenance on saws (blade changes, fluid checks) and adhere strictly to all HSE guidelines, including wearing proper PPE for cutting environments.
Qualifications & Experience
  • Experience: 1–3 years of experience in a manufacturing, heavy fabrication, or machine shop environment. Direct experience operating industrial bandsaws is a strong asset.
  • Forklift Skills: Proficient forklift operating experience is required. Active certification is preferred; however, forklift safety training and certification can be provided for the right candidate.
  • Computer Skills: Basic computer literacy with the ability to navigate internal databases solely to check inventory levels.
  • Technical Skills: Ability to read tape measures, use calipers, and follow instructions from blue prints or Bills of Materials (BOM) for precise cuts.
  • Attributes: Strong mechanical aptitude, high attention to detail, and a proactive attitude.
Physical Requirements & Working Conditions
  • Outdoor & Indoor Work: Comfortable working both indoors on the concrete shop floor and outdoors in the material storage yards under varying weather conditions.
  • Physical capability to lift up to 50 lbs regularly and stand for extended periods during saw operation.
