Seaspan Marine seeks a Marine Electronics Technologist to manage operation, maintenance and repair of electronics on Seaspan vessels. You will plan budgets, coordinate with crews, and guide shoreside maintenance, ensuring seaworthiness and safety.

The objective of the Marine Electronics Technologist involves managing, planning and responding to electronic equipment and systems on board Seaspan vessels, providing and implementing repair recommendations, overseeing the planned maintenance program, and providing guidance and mentorship to vessel crews and shoreside maintenance personnel. This role acts as a resource for the shipboard crew and shoreside maintenance personnel regarding routine maintenance of the vessels.

Marine Electronics Technologist is accountable for the effective operation, maintenance and repair of the electronics and automation equipment installed on Seaspan Marine vessels. The objective of the Marine Electronics Technologist involves managing, planning and responding to electronic equipment and systems on board Seaspan vessels, providing and implementing repair recommendations, overseeing the planned maintenance program, and providing guidance and mentorship to vessel crews and shoreside maintenance personnel. This role acts as a resource for the shipboard crew and shoreside maintenance personnel regarding routine maintenance of the vessels.

Note: Due to business needs, this position is required to be fully on-site based at 10 Pemberton Avenue, North Vancouver.

What You'll Do

• Participates in the planning and management of the annual electronics budgets and resource allocation for the Seaspan fleet. This includes planning for obsolescence and implementation of emerging technologies and equipment over vessel operational life.
• Maintains all regulatory licenses, contracts and service agreements for the marine electronics. Including radios, chart systems, radars, satellite connectivity, emergency beacons.
• Respond to issues reported from vessels, review the report accuracy and initial diagnosis over the phone with vessel crew, assess if repair can be conducted while the vessel is at sea , weighing in the effects on crew safety and possibility of further equipment damage.
• Travel to the vessel or arrange an on-call repair person to inspect and repair the problem. Assist the vessel crews and shoreside maintenance personnel in understanding the operation and functionality of vessel systems.
• Coordinate with service providers, technicians and suppliers to plan required maintenance as well as diagnose and resolve technical issues.
• Daily decisions of this role involve providing and implementing repair recommendations, such as what to repair (critical items vs. items that can be scheduled), methodology for repair (how), cost and benefits of the repair (vs. buying or building new), timing (when), necessity of repair (to what extend), etc. Such decisions are based on ensuring seaworthiness, safety and the suitability for intended trade of the vessels.
• Checks in with shipboard engineers, monitors the log sheets and maintenance program to ensure daily routine electrical maintenance is performed on the vessel and proper records are kept.
• Through regular interactions with the Engineering Superintendent, Port Engineers, Manager Vessel Operations and Port Captains, contribute to vessel refits, overhauls and assisting in the inspection process with classification, statutory, underwriter and vetting surveyors.
• Conduct equipment inspections and ensure that the crew understand the conditions of the equipment from a functionality, optimization and safety perspective.
• Assist with ordering and supply of parts and equipment necessary to keep the daily operations of electronics running smoothly and efficiently. Maintain inventory of operational critical electronics spares for vessels.
• Participate in the budgeting process, collect quotations and plan the purchase of parts and consumables for upcoming maintenance, repairs and inspections.
• When purchasing new equipment, consider the importance of standardizing equipment across the fleet, source different options available and obtain quotes prior to initiating a purchase order.
• Provides technical consultations to new construction projects including proposal of suitable vessel equipment based on experience, cost-benefit analysis, and offering design input based on functionality, efficiency and safety considerations.
• Assist with an on-call rotation for diagnosis and repair of vessel electronics and automation outside of the regular work schedule.
• Performs additional duties as required.

What You'll Bring

• Marine Electro-Technical Officer (ETO) or Industrial electricians with sufficient training and experience shall also be considered.
• 7+ years’ experience with troubleshooting and debugging and repairing of industrial electro-mechanical components and equipment.
• Experience with electrical generation and distribution systems.
• Experience working in a marine environment is an asset.
• Possess mechanical experience in assembling and disassembling components.
• Experience with AC/DC Switchboards, Grid Converters and Propulsion inverters are an asset.
• Valid class 5 driver’s license.
• A strong electrical background with extra training in navigation electronics, electronic control system and PLC protocols.
• Knowledge of vessels and vessel propulsion systems including generator and motor knowledge/maintenance and repair experience.
• Must be willing to assist other team members with mechanical repairs.
• Exceptional communication (written & verbal) and interpersonal skills.
• Ability to work under tight deadlines.
• Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills, ability to dissect a problem and form solutions that meet real-time constraints.
• Demonstrated ability in diagnosing electrical and mechanical failures.
• Capability of modifying and/or changing mechanical parts as required.
• Team player with a positive mind-set and ability to adapt / work independently in a challenging environment.
• Must be able to prioritize, multi-task and make sound engineering decisions
• Knowledge of Transport Canada and Classification Societies requirements.
• Knowledge of vessel operations and the requirement of the towing industry is an asset.
• Strong computer skills, including equipment service laptop experience, planned maintenance software, basic AutoCAD skills, Microsoft Office suite of programs, SharePoint and cloud-based applications.
• Knowledge of procurement software is an asset.

The estimated salary for this position is $97,200 - $118,800. In determining final salary, Seaspan considers many factors including the successful Candidate’s skillset and experience as well as position location and internal equity. The final base salary offer will be at the Company’s sole discretion and presented as part of a competitive total compensation package.
