BMT is seeking a Marine Designer Technologist to join our Technical Capability team in Canada. The role focuses on producing high‑quality marine design and modelling work for a range of vessels, from small craft to larger platforms.

You will apply CAD standards, develop detailed drawings, and support surveys and site verification in collaboration with senior staff. A professional technologist in maritime engineering is preferred, with clearances and a passion for safe, sustainable naval

Qualifications

• College Technologist Diploma in Naval Architecture, Marine Engineering, Mechanical Engineering or a similar discipline.
• A minimum of five (5) years of CAD/drafting experience producing engineering or production drawings for ships, submarines or marine assets.
• Advanced expertise in 2D drafting and 3D modelling using AutoCAD, SolidWorks, Rhino or similar.
• Eligible for a Canadian security clearance.

Responsibilities

• Support Capability department with engineering services for internal and external customers.
• Independently undertake technical work coordinating with colleagues on projects.
• Work within a multi-disciplinary team and follow ethical codes of conduct.
• Contribute to best practice under supervision of senior staff and comply with QMS processes.
• Produce and verify ship drawings including general arrangements, structural details, equipment layouts, and installation drawings.
• Perform ship/submarine surveys and site verification, produce survey reports per client/standards.

Key Responsibilities

The Marine Designer Technologist is responsible for professionally and efficiently executing design and modelling work in support of client taskings for small to large platforms.

Responsibilities and tasks include:

General:

• Support Capability department in providing engineering services to internal and external customers.
• Independently undertake technical work which requires coordination with colleagues and making a substantial contribution to assigned projects.
• Work collaboratively within a multi-disciplinary team.
• Comply with relevant business and ethics codes of conduct.
• Undertake engineering activities in a way that contributes to best practice under the guidance of senior staff members.
• Work within the BMT Quality Management System (QMS) processes and procedures.
• Demonstrate willingness and active adoption of coaching and mentoring provided by senior staff and support with mentorship to junior staff in developing technical competency.
• Contributes to building a positive team culture through input, feedback and participation in team building and wellness activities.

Role Specific:

• Knowledge of marine and ship design aspects, awareness of staged design development and maintaining design intent.
• Proven experience producing a range of ship drawings, including
  • General arrangements,
  • Structural drawings and details,
  • Equipment layouts including associated system schematics, piping arrangements, and electrical wire diagrams, and
  • Detailed design drawings including fabrication and installation drawings.
• Apply project and company CAD standards, drawing conventions, title block requirements, revision control, and configuration management procedures.
• Conduct ship or submarine surveys and site verification activities including
  • Validate existing structure and system configurations,
  • Incorporate as-fitted details into drawing packages, and
  • Produce survey reports which compile inspection findings and follow client, Class or Standard designated formats.
• Awareness of domain specific standards including International Maritime Organization (IMO) regulations, Class Society rules, Transport Canada Regulations and Canadian Forces Technical Orders.
• Apply knowledge to resolve technical issues of moderate scope and complexity using proven approaches and techniques including
  • Development of design or technical specifications to resolve complex repairs.
  • Assessment of structures and systems against relevant codes and standards to determine whether repairs or changes are required.
  • Assessment of structures and systems against relevant codes and standards to determine design changes and refits.
• Provide input to risk assessments for design or repair specifications.

Skills, Knowledge & Expertise

Essential:

A College Technologist Diploma in Naval Architecture, Marine Engineering, Mechanical Engineering or a similar discipline.

• A minimum of five (5) years of relevant computer aided design (CAD) and drafting experience producing engineering, detailed design or production drawings for ships, submarines or other marine assets.
• Advanced expertise in 2D drafting and 3D modelling software packages including AutoCAD, SolidWorks, Rhino, or similar.
• Provincial certification for Engineering Technologists.
• Eligible for a Canadian security clearance.

Desirable:

• Experience supporting a Marine Drawing Office.
• Practical experience working with marine platform systems (small or large boats).
• Experience working in a fast-paced commercial shipyard environment.
• Experience and knowledge of Department of Defence drawing templates and standards.
