Job summary

BMT is seeking a Senior Naval Architect - Submarine Structures to lead structural calculations and evaluate fitness-for-service for submarine designs. The role requires extensive naval architecture experience and the ability to travel internationally for deployments.

The team operates within a multi-disciplinary environment, emphasizing quality, ethics, and continuous professional development. Halifax, Ottawa or Victoria-based postings are available.

Qualifications

• Minimum 15 years of experience in Naval Architecture.
• Existing registration with a Professional Engineering governance body in the province of work.
• Eligible for a Canadian and International security clearance.
• Hold a valid passport and travel internationally.

Responsibilities

• Provide Naval Architecture advice and support to clients.
• Lead submarine structural calculations for existing platforms or new builds.
• Serve as Technical Lead on projects and ensure QMS compliance.
• Collaborate in a multi-disciplinary team and manage technical work.

Key Responsibilities

General

• Provide Naval Architecture advice and support to external and internal customers.
• Manage your own technical work and evaluate its effectiveness to improve best practice.
• Work collaboratively within a multi-disciplinary team.
• Comply with relevant business and ethics codes of conduct.
• Undertake engineering and non-engineering activities in a way that contributes to best practice
• Act as Technical Lead (TL) on specified projects.
• Act as Technical Assurer on specified projects.
• Act as Project Manager (PM) on specified projects.
• Work within the BMT Quality Management System (QMS) processes and procedures.
• Maintain your technical competency in your area(s) of specialization.
• Promotes building a positive team culture through input, feedback and participation in team building and wellness activities.

• Proven ability to lead and conduct submarine structural calculations for existing platforms and/or new builds.
• Provide an expert opinion on design and fitness for service of submarine structures including:
• Submarine pressure hull,
• Submarine pressure hull structural features, and
• Primary and secondary submarine structures.

Essential

Skills, Knowledge & Expertise

• Degree in Marine Engineering or Naval Architecture;
• Minimum 15 years of experience in Naval Architecture;
• Extensive experience working on new build or re-fit of existing submarines.
• Existing registration or ability to obtain registration with Professional Engineering governance body in Province of work; and,
• Eligible for a Canadian and International security clearance.
• Hold a valid passport and able to travel internationally on a minimum of a 3-month deployment.

Desirable:

• Detailed knowledge and experience in the following areas:
• Ship or submarine hydrostatics including stability, weight control and margins; and
• Ship or submarine inclining experiments (submerged and surfaced);
• Experience in the in-service support of naval systems and/or engineering design;
• Experience in the development and use of technical studies and drawings;
• An understanding of specifications for government and commercial vessels; and
• Experience in systems integration, ship construction and/or repair
