Job description

Manual Machinist – Turning, Milling & Grinding

$28–$35/hour (negotiable based on experience)

Full-time | Day Shift | Monday to Friday, 8:00 AM – 4:30 PM

The Machining Center is seeking an experienced Manual Machinist with strong skills in manual turning, milling, and grinding. This role is ideal for someone who takes pride in precision, understands the responsibility of working on customer-supplied, one-off repair components, and enjoys mentoring the next generation of machinists.

You will work in a low-volume, high-variety environment, completing maintenance and repair machining where accuracy, judgment, and confidence are critical. This position does not require CNC programming (but will help the candite stand out).

We don’t do mass layoffs. We’ve been in business since 1988 and continue to grow steadily by investing in our people, equipment, and long-term stability.

Our team is made up of individuals who love their trade and take pride in doing things right the first time. A strong cultural fit, problem-solver mindset, and genuine enthusiasm for machining are essential.

Responsibilities:
  • Perform manual turning and milling operations on lathes and mills
  • Complete cylindrical grinding and surface grinding to tight tolerances (we can train if needed)
  • Machine and repair customer-supplied, one-off components (e.g., shafts, bushings, housings)
  • Read and interpret blueprints, sketches, and verbal instructions
  • Plan machining steps independently with a focus on accuracy and part preservation
  • Conduct quality inspections using calibrated measuring tools
  • Work with a variety of materials (steel, stainless, aluminum, plastics, alloys, etc.)
  • Operate additional shop equipment such as saws, presses, and drill presses
  • Perform light machine maintenance and upkeep
  • Maintain a clean and safe work area while following all safety protocols (PPE, WHMIS, lockout/tagout)
  • Support and mentor apprentices as skills and experience allow
Qualifications:
  • 5+ years of manual machining experience preferred
  • Demonstrated experience with manual lathes, mills, and grinding equipment
  • High level of confidence working on unique, non-repeat customer parts where creativity is encouraged
  • Strong ability to interpret drawings and understand fits, tolerances, and finishes
  • Excellent attention to detail, problem-solving skills, and mechanical aptitude
  • Ability to work independently and make sound machining decisions
  • Red Seal Machinist certification is an asset but not required
  • Interest in teaching and supporting apprentices is strongly preferred
What We Offer:
  • $28–$35/hour, depending on experience and capability
  • Full-time, permanent position with steady daytime hours
  • RRSP program and company-paid benefits
  • Clean, well-equipped shop with a mix of traditional and modern equipment
  • Interesting, challenging work (no mass production)
  • Long-term stability with a company focused on sustainable growth
  • Supportive team culture that values craftsmanship and experience
  • Regular team events (minimum one company activity per quarter)
  • Collaborative environment that encourages team input. Topics such as equipment purchases and company direction.

Applicants must be willing to complete practical machining testing as part of the interview process.
