Job summary

Urban Machinery Corp. in Cambridge, Ontario is seeking a reliable Machinist Apprentice to join our manufacturing team. You will help set up, operate, and maintain CNC and conventional machine tools to fabricate precision parts according to engineering drawings and specs.

This apprenticeship provides hands-on training under experienced machinists, with opportunities to develop skills in 5-axis milling, tool selection, and quality inspection, while adhering to safety and production deadlines.

Qualifications

  • Completion of secondary school is required.
  • At least 1 year of experience in CNC machining or related environment is required.
  • Experience setting up and operating CNC mills, lathes, or similar equipment is required.
  • Experience with 5-axis CNC machining using 3+2 indexing is required.
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints, drawings, and production specs is required.
  • Experience using precision measuring tools (calipers, micrometers, gauges) is required.
  • Basic knowledge of CNC programming, G-code, CAD/CAM software is an asset.
  • Ontario General Machinist (429A) apprenticeship program is an asset but not required.
  • Strong attention to detail and workplace safety are essential.
  • Ability to work in a manufacturing environment and stand for extended periods.

Responsibilities

  • Read and interpret engineering drawings, blueprints, specifications, and work orders.
  • Set up, operate, and adjust CNC machine tools (mills and lathes) under supervision.
  • Assist with 5-axis CNC milling using 3+2 indexing.
  • Select, install, and adjust cutting tools, fixtures, attachments, and accessories.
  • Load materials and monitor machining operations to maintain quality and productivity.
  • Assist with reviewing and modifying CNC programs under supervision.
  • Measure, inspect, and verify finished parts using precision instruments.
  • Identify machining defects or equipment concerns and report them.
  • Perform routine machine maintenance and keep areas clean and organized.
  • Follow health & safety procedures, QC standards and company policies.
  • Collaborate with supervisors and team to meet deadlines.

Job Summary:

We are seeking a reliable and detail-oriented Machinist Apprentice to join our manufacturing team in Cambridge, Ontario. The successful candidate will assist with setting up, operating, and maintaining CNC and conventional machine tools to manufacture and modify precision parts in accordance with engineering drawings, technical specifications, and quality standards.

This position is intended for an apprentice who already has basic machine-shop experience and is able to perform CNC machining duties safely under supervision while continuing to develop their machining skills.

The position provides hands-on workplace training and an opportunity to further develop competencies in the General Machinist trade under the guidance and supervision of experienced machinists.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Read and interpret engineering drawings, blueprints, specifications, and work orders.
  • Set up, operate, and adjust CNC machine tools, including CNC mills and lathes, under the guidance and supervision of experienced machinists.
  • Assist with setting up and operating 5-axis CNC milling equipment using 3+2 indexing, under the guidance and supervision of experienced machinists
  • Select, install, and adjust cutting tools, fixtures, attachments, and machine accessories.
  • Load materials and components, monitor machining operations, and make adjustments as required to maintain quality and production efficiency.
  • Assist with reviewing and modifying CNC programs under supervision, as required.
  • Measure, inspect, and verify finished parts using precision measuring instruments, including calipers, micrometers, gauges, and other inspection tools.
  • Identify machining defects, tooling issues, or equipment concerns and report them to the supervisor, and assist with corrective action as required.
  • Perform routine machine maintenance and keep work areas, machines, and tools clean and organized.
  • Follow all workplace health and safety procedures, quality-control standards, and company policies.
  • Work collaboratively with supervisors and other team members to meet production deadlines and maintain efficient workflow.
