Manager, Reliability Requirements & Market Support

The Alberta Electric System Operator (AESO) is responsible for the safe, reliable, and economical planning and operation of the Alberta Interconnected Electric System. We provide open and non-discriminatory access to Alberta’s interconnected power grid and facilitate Alberta’s competitive wholesale electricity market. Job Description

Reporting to the Director of Grid Planning & Operations Engineering, the Manager of Reliability Requirements & Market Support leads two key teams focused on maintaining system reliability and supporting efficient market operations in Alberta. This role offers an excellent opportunity for a strategic leader with strong technical and market insight to guide engineering and market support teams and shape Alberta’s electricity future.

In the engineering domain, the Manager oversees the development of reliability and interconnection requirements, system performance monitoring, ancillary services assessments, and wind and solar forecasts. This includes conducting special studies and developing tools to enhance operational readiness.

In the market support domain, responsibilities include customer support and training, administration of market accounts for energy and ancillary services, procurement of ancillary services, and developing technical and system requirements for market operations. The Manager also supports compliance activities related to asset performance.

Key Accountabilities:

  • Lead, motivate, and mentor staff with exceptional team-building skills.
  • Develop the AESO’s Reliability Requirements Roadmap.
  • Develop and oversee reliability requirements, including interconnection standards.
  • Monitor system performance, implementing solutions to maintain stability and performance.
  • Enhance ancillary services design and assessment.
  • Determine ancillary service needs to meet performance targets.
  • Support special studies related to system reliability and interconnections.
  • Develop study guidelines and train engineers in special studies.
  • Deliver tools to improve operational readiness and efficiency.
  • Collaborate on major system event investigations and operational concerns.
  • Develop policies for synchro-phasor data and assess PMU needs.
  • Procure operating reserves and qualify service providers.
  • Support procurement of contracted ancillary services.
  • Conduct or support reliability-related studies, e.g., GMD risk, inter-area oscillations.
  • Oversee wind and solar forecasts for real-time dispatch.
  • Provide primary support to energy and AS market participants.
  • Administer customer accounts and develop requirements for market systems.
  • Support settlement processes and customer outreach programs.

Skills and Experiences:

  • University degree in engineering, emphasizing power systems, control systems, or related fields.
  • Member of APEGA (P. Eng.).
  • 10-15 years of relevant experience in the electricity industry.
  • Proven leadership in managing technical engineering and market support teams.
  • Experience in developing strategic relationships with stakeholders.
  • Supervisory experience with engineers and EITs.
  • Knowledge of Alberta Reliability Standards and ISO Rules.
  • Understanding of Alberta energy and market operations.
