Job summary

Scotiabank in Toronto is seeking a Manager, Originations Risk Management to lead the development of credit risk strategies for unsecured lending products, including credit cards and lines of credit, ensuring risk-adjusted returns.

You will drive portfolio analytics, monitor credit quality, automate adjudication rules, and influence stakeholders through data-driven insights while supporting OSFI and internal audit requirements. This role emphasizes collaboration and continuous process improvement.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in business, statistics, economics, mathematics, management science, or analytics.
  • 2+ years with a financial institution in the risk/portfolio management field, with rigorous logical thinking and solid understanding of credit principles.
  • Prior experience in unsecured lending (credit cards, lines of credit).
  • Strong hands-on data analytic and logical thinking ability, with a track record of data-driven decision making.
  • Ability to translate data into actionable insights using strong data storytelling skills.
  • Working knowledge of SAS, SQL, R, Python and reporting tools such as Tableau, Power BI.
  • Excellent communication and written skills complemented with sound deductive reasoning, sound judgement and data storytelling.
  • Knowledge of credit scoring, risk assessment, portfolio management, and behaviour scoring.

Responsibilities

Title: Manager, Originations Risk Management

As a Manager, Originations Risk Management you will be a key contributor to the development of credit risk strategies, policies, and procedures for new account originations for Unsecured Lending products (Credit Cards, Unsecured Lines of Credit, Overdraft Protection, etc.) to optimize risk-adjusted returns for Canadian Banking within Global Risk Management.

Is this role right for you? In this role, you will:

  • Develop credit risk strategies and policies by leveraging champion/challenger capabilities and incorporate third-party data including non-traditional data, and procedures for new account originations using analytics, empirical decision models, and competitive analysis.
  • Portfolio analytics, monitoring, and reporting: Monitor application credit quality, approval rates, total bank exposure, early delinquency, exceptions, origination trends, and emerging portfolio risks; conduct independent analysis using advanced data querying and manipulation tools; translate findings into actionable insights through effective data storytelling; and produce monthly, quarterly, and ad hoc reporting to support leadership oversight and early-warning risk monitoring
  • Support the evaluation of customer relationships across lending and non-lending products to strengthen applicant segmentation and risk differentiation.
  • Demonstrate initiative to automate and simplify adjudication rules, thresholds, and monitoring processes using technical, analytical skills and industry best practices.
  • Participate in Credit Cards and Unsecured Lending initiatives related to front-book growth, new products, channels, or customer journeys
  • Support business cases, risk proposals, and requirements documents review to ensure alignment with risk appetite and sound credit principles.
  • Act as a change agent by proactively identifying opportunities to enhance origination policies, controls, and processes to improve performance and customer experience.
  • Support investigations and solutioning for OSFI findings and/or Internal Audit items in an appropriate and acceptable timeframe.
  • Influence stakeholders across multiple levels of the organization and vendors, including leadership team, through clear, data-driven insights and recommendations.
  • Communicate complex analytical concepts in a concise manner. Utilize excellent data storytelling skills to present with impactful analysis and advisory.

Do you have the skills that will enable you to succeed in this role?

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in business, statistics, economics, mathematics, management science, or analytics. Advanced degree or designations (MBA, CFA or FRM) an asset
  • A minimum of 2 years with a financial institution in the risk/portfolio management field, with rigorous logical thinking and solid understanding of credit principles. Prior experience in unsecured lending (credit cards, lines of credit).
  • Strong hands-on data analytic and logical thinking ability, with a track record of data-driven decision making.
  • Ability to translate data into actionable insights using strong data storytelling skills.
  • Working knowledge of at least one of the data analytics tools, such as SAS, SQL, R, Python and reporting tools such as Tableau, Power BI.
  • Excellent communication and written skills complemented with solid deductive reasoning, sound judgement and data storytelling.
  • Knowledge of credit scoring, risk assessment, portfolio management, and behaviour scoring.
