Job summary

Scotiabank in Toronto, Ontario seeks a Credit Risk Associate to adjudicate commercial credit requests and assess risk across portfolios. You will collaborate with Banking to ensure compliance with policies and regulatory requirements, while monitoring client risk and actions.

The role focuses on effective risk management, data validation, and ongoing monitoring of early warning signs, with emphasis on providing accurate credit decisions and maintaining strong client relationships.

Qualifications

  • Minimum 3 years of experience in financial analysis or credit adjudication.
  • Understanding of bank lending policies, financial analysis, risk assessment techniques, credit structuring and related legislation.
  • Proven credit judgment and ability to manage a commercial credit portfolio.
  • Strong communication skills, written and verbal.
  • Ability to prioritize work and meet SLA parameters.

Responsibilities

  • Adjudicate credit requests up to assigned limits and provide sound recommendations.
  • Evaluate risks and client creditworthiness within policy and regulatory requirements.
  • Monitor changes in risk, provide actions for the portfolio, and advise on strategy.
  • Partner with Banking to ensure risk and compliance in day-to-day operations.
  • Support data documentation, reporting, and KPI adherence.

Ensure credit adjudication, control activities and related processes are conducted within a strong risk culture, focusing on emerging risks and within risk appetite. Provide an objective oversight and effective challenge, enable capital optimization, ensure ongoing monitoring, and partner with business lines to develop effective strategy.

Is this role right for you? In this role, you will:

Risk Assessment and Rating Assignment

  • Adjudicate credit requests up to assigned limits; make sound recommendations within the Bank risk appetite and in adherence to our policy and standards.
  • Evaluate financial and non-financial risks for an accurate client risk profiling, and challenge banking strategies and ensuring compliance with bank policies and regulatory requirements.
  • Risk assessment and rating assignment, timely monitoring changes in client’s creditworthiness, and recommending adequate course of action.
  • Understand economic, political and regulatory framework and how it impacts the assigned portfolio. Recommending potential actions.
  • Act as an advisor partner for Banking.

Client Centric (internal/ external):

  • Play an integral role in the client relationship experience by collaborating effectively with Banking, providing feedback to ensure a cohesive and efficient client experience while managing risk effectively.
  • To ensure adjudication process is achieved within the established SLA parameters. Documentation, Data and Reporting:
  • Validate GRM critical data elements in credit systems which feed capital and provisions.
  • Support innovation and digitize risk processes, improving accuracy of and speed of credit decisions and operational efficiencies.
  • Proactive and ongoing monitoring of Early Warning Signs and sectorial/market trends, to ensure timely actions on assigned portfolio.
  • Work with Banking to ensure adherence to all compliance metrics of the loan portfolio is managed effectively within defined KPI. Keeping the Bank Safe
  • Supports effective and efficient operations of his/her respective areas, while ensuring the adequacy, adherence to and effectiveness of day-to-day business controls to meet obligations with respect to operational risk, regulatory compliance risk, AML/ATF risk and conduct risk, including but not limited to responsibilities under the Operational Risk Management Framework, Regulatory Compliance Risk Management Framework, AML/ATF Global Handbook and the Guidelines for Business Conduct.

Do you have the skills that will enable you to succeed in this role? - We'd love to work with you if you have:

  • Minimum of 3 years of experience in financial analysis or credit adjudication.
  • Minimum Post-Secondary Education completed in business or related area.
  • Understanding of Bank lending policies and procedures, financial analysis, risk assessment techniques, credit structuring, collateral and security documentation and registration, collection, related legislation and accounting practices.
  • Proven credit judgment.
  • Proven ability in administering a Commercial credit portfolio.
  • Good negotiation and problem resolution skills.
  • Good communication skills, written and verbal, in order to produce informative, concise and professional credit replies, presentations and correspondence.
  • Good organizational skills and the ability to prioritize work effectively and efficiently.
  • Good coaching and counseling skills in credit.
