The Manager of Electrical Engineering is responsible for CEM’s Electrical Engineering Department and is a people‐focused, technical professional who provides technical direction and management guidance to the engineering team. Responsible for leading and supervising a team of electrical engineers and engineering staff as they develop, modify, and create solutions to our clients’ technical problems.
KEY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Talent Management
- Lead, manage, and hold accountable direct reports to oversee the production and quality control of deliverables to ensure all services and work products are to CEM’s professional standards, and are delivered on-time and within budget.
- Develop and retain electrical engineering team members who exhibit CEM’s core values and ensure they are actively engaged in serving CEM’s clients. This may involve training and mentoring of both direct reports and other CEM staff or facilitating such activities to ensure CEM keeps up to date with modern engineering techniques, practices, and application of technology.
- Identify the need for additional talent and maintain ultimate responsibility for performance of new Electrical Engineering Department members (hiring support provided by HR Department).
- Prepare and conduct performance reviews and conduct/solve internal performance issues in an expedient manner.
- Work closely with Director of Engineering and Project Directors to assign team members to projects, to optimize benefit to both CEM’s clients and team members.
- Provide immediate, specific, and appropriate constructive feedback to employees or team members, focused on actions that would make the biggest difference in employee performance (i.e., reinforce core values).
- Collaborate with the Director of HR on tasks such as interviewing, onboarding, career planning, role transitions, responsibility definition, and compensation adjustments for electrical engineering staff.
- Support Director of Engineering with the development and implementation of policies, standards, and calculation procedures for engineering and technical work, and ensure consistent application within the Electrical Engineering Department in accordance with CEM’s Quality Management System (QMS).
- Develop and facilitate development of technical guidelines, best practices, lessons learned, templates, calculations, tools, checklists, and other means to maximize quality, consistency, and efficiency in electrical engineering at CEM.
- Review, approve, or modify deliverables prior to issue, as required.
- Provide technical assistance and guidance to CEM projects and CEM clients, where value can be added, based on senior level experience and expertise.
- Administer CEM’s Quality Assurance/Quality Control process within the department.
- Ensure that all electrical engineering work complies with CEM’s Professional Practice Management Plan (PPMP) and relevant codes and standards.
- Fulfill the duties of Responsible Member under CEM’s Permit to Practice, including validation of work products, or equivalent jurisdictional responsibilities as prescribed by the applicable engineering authority.
- Present and explain reports and findings to clients, as required.
- Consult or negotiate with clients during the preparation of deliverables, as required.
Administration
- Plan, manage, and oversee the daily functions, operations, and activities of the electrical engineering team to continuously improve organizational productivity and customer focus.
- Support Director of Engineering, Project Directors, and Project Managers with coordination of resources to ensure all projects are properly staffed with suitable expertise and supervision, and progressing as scheduled. Facilitate collaborative prioritization, as required.
- Coordinate and facilitate Electrical Engineering Department meetings and represent the Electrical Engineering Department in relevant operational meetings.
- Review and approve timesheets, expense reports, time-off requests, professional development requests, and address other requests from direct reports.
- Evaluate Site Safety Plans, monitor employee safety, and ensure full compliance with occupational health and safety regulations and CEM safety procedures.
- Contribute to the development of proposed budgets for departmental activities such as training.
- Monitor and manage departmental metrics in pursuit of CEM’s technical and financial performance goals.
QUALIFICIATIONS & PERSONAL ATTRIBUTES

- University Degree in Electrical Engineering
- Registered as a Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) in Ontario (preferred) and/or other Canadian province(s)
- Minimum of 10 years of related industry experience, including leading high-performance engineering teams
- Strong understanding of all commercial and technical elements of power projects
