Job Summary
The Manager, Insurance is responsible for supporting the Senior Manager, Insurance in developing and implementing CN's commercial insurance programs and strategy. This involves participating in the development of the long-term assurance plan, responding to internal requests, and maintaining relationships with external service providers.
Main Responsibilities
Insurance Strategic Plan, Regulatory and Reputational Risk Management
- Stay informed about market conditions and trends for Class 1 railways regarding property, third-party liability, and Directors and Officers (D&O) coverage.
- Review CN’s and subsidiaries’ insurance programs annually to assess legal responsibilities, risks, and adequacy.
- Propose solutions to mitigate insurance risks and enhance CN’s reputation.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams on developing and implementing insurance strategies aligned with business objectives.
- Oversee the collection of information for insurance submissions and applications.
- Assist in drafting and reviewing annual insurance submissions and applications.
- Support the establishment of priorities to advance insurance risk mitigation in line with regulatory, legal, legislative, and business goals.
- Negotiate insurance agreements with brokers, ensuring terms meet CN’s requirements.
- Work with Law and Procurement to review legal contracts with vendors, suppliers, and partners.
- Coordinate with brokers and forensic accountants on large insurance claims.
- Contribute to legal arguments for insurance claims presentations.
- Participate in the Corporate Incident Management Team during crises such as derailments.
Stakeholders’ Engagement
- Manage relationships with external brokers and oversee their work.
- Assist in communicating strategic insurance directions to brokers.
- Maintain good relationships with local brokers.
- Participate in renewal meetings with insurance underwriters and organize annual meetings.
- Build relationships with government officials involved in insurance regulations.
- Collaborate with other CN departments on insurance requests.
- Develop and deliver insurance training and information sessions for internal stakeholders.
Professional Development
- Engage with peers and stakeholders to foster collaboration.
- Plan to enhance knowledge in risk management, insurance, and the railway industry through training and involvement.
Working Conditions
The role involves standard office work, with a regular schedule from Monday to Friday, including remote work options on Wednesdays and Fridays. Overtime and travel across Canada and the U.S. may be required. The role demands ability to work under pressure, meet deadlines, and handle stressful situations.
Requirements
Experience
- 2-5 years in insurance and risk management.
- Experience with publicly listed companies, insurance communication, and risk management as a key contact.
- Experience in transportation or Class 1 railways is an asset.
Education/Certification/Designation
- Bachelor’s Degree in Commerce with specialization in Law, Statistics, Economics, Finance, or Accounting.
- Insurance or claims certification and risk management designations are assets.
