Job description

Founded in 2002, the Nuclear Waste Management Organization (NWMO) is a not-for-profit organization responsible for the safe, long-term management of Canada’s intermediate- and high-level radioactive waste, ensuring protection for people and the environment for future generations.

The NWMO has been guided for over 20 years by a team of scientists, engineers, and Indigenous Knowledge Holders developing innovative solutions for nuclear waste management. In 2024, NWMO selected the Wabigoon Lake Ojibway Nation (WLON)-Ignace area as the site for its Deep Geological Repository for used nuclear fuel.

Manager, Health and Safety - Field

Employment Status: Full-time – One (1) position available

Location: Site based at Ignace, ON - 304 Main Street

Job Summary:

Reporting to the Director, Site Characterization, the Manager, Health & Safety - Field, oversees the review, development, implementation, and monitoring of the NWMO’s Project Site Health, Safety, Security, and Environmental management systems during the Site Characterization phase. Responsibilities include ensuring safety during activities such as drilling, groundwater monitoring, and site investigations, and ensuring compliance with all relevant standards and regulations.

  • Promote a safety culture through policies, procedures, hazard assessments, and reporting.
  • Review and maintain safety policies and standards across the project.
  • Collaborate on continuous safety improvements.
  • Ensure all personnel participate in risk assessments and follow safety procedures.
  • Provide guidance on health, safety, and environmental issues.
  • Investigate incidents and address complaints and grievances.
  • Support training programs and ensure workforce competence.
  • Plan and execute emergency drills and ensure proper recordkeeping.
  • Maintain compliance with legal and industry standards such as ISO, CNSC, CSAO, OHSA.
  • Participate in safety committees and emergency response teams.
  • Stay informed on legislation and industry best practices.
  • Coordinate with organizational functions for emergency preparedness and reporting systems.
  • Review and improve HSSE observation and reporting programs.
  • Perform other related duties as required.
Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Engineering, Construction Safety, Occupational Health, Public Health, or Human Resources.
  • CRSP certification is an asset.
  • Minimum 10 years of progressive experience in occupational health, safety, and environmental management, especially in site-based roles.
  • Experience in regulated industries, energy sector, or similar fields is preferred.
  • Proven ability to implement and manage field health and safety and environmental compliance programs.
  • Strong organizational, problem-solving, facilitation, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to influence across organizational levels and work within multidisciplinary teams.
  • Effective project management and business writing skills.
  • Attention to detail and knowledge of employment legislation and OHS regulations.

Must be eligible to work in Canada and able to meet security clearance requirements.
