Manager, Commercial Underwriting (Property and Casualty)

What can you expect in this role?

  • Drive profitable growth of Definity's commercial auto and property insurance in the region.
  • Lead a team of underwriters in selecting mid to large market risks to generate underwriting profit.
  • Maintain a profitable mid-market commercial insurance portfolio.
  • Achieve profitable growth targets within the West Region.
  • Support the Regional Director in communicating and implementing the Commercial Insurance strategy for mid and large markets.
  • Develop, coach, mentor, and manage the performance of direct reports, including performance improvement plans to meet business, productivity, profitability, service, and KPI targets.
  • Ensure adherence to underwriting and quality control initiatives to meet Return-on-Equity targets.
  • Foster a high-performance culture that encourages productivity, collaboration, teamwork, and professionalism.
  • Ensure team compliance with relevant federal and provincial Auto and Property Insurance regulations.
  • Collaborate with the Vice President and Business Development team to define and execute regional broker relationship strategies to grow the portfolio sustainably.
  • Support direct reports in building and managing broker relationships within the region.

What do you bring to the role?

  • University degree, college diploma, or CIP designation required.
  • At least 5 years of Commercial Property & Casualty underwriting experience.
  • 2-3 years of leadership experience (formal or informal) is an asset.
  • Proven ability to develop and maintain positive broker relations.
  • Exceptional customer service and communication skills.
  • Strong management and leadership skills to build effective relationships with partners and brokers.
  • Experience guiding a team through organizational change.
  • Ability to influence and negotiate effectively with stakeholders.

Salary range: $87,400 - $161,000
