Job description

Manager, Business Development & Pricing

Halifax, Nova Scotia

Reference # JL-STE-10102

As Atlantic Canada's largest regional law firm, Stewart McKelvey is committed to delivering exceptional legal services and innovative solutions to clients across Canada and beyond. With six offices and a growing national reach, the firm continues to evolve its approach to business development, client service, and commercial operations to support long-term growth.

On behalf of our client, we are seeking a Manager, Business Development & Pricing to join Stewart McKelvey's Commercial Operations team. Think of this role less as closing deals and more as building the engine behind growth: you won’t be pitching clients yourself, but you will be the person equipping the firm’s lawyers with the strategy, tools, and structure they need to win and grow business. A solid grounding in business development and marketing principles is essential, but it will be applied through strategy, systems, and enablement rather than direct client-facing sales.

Reporting to the Director, Commercial Operations, this role will serve as a key partner to firm leadership, supporting business development strategy execution, pricing initiatives, proposal management, CRM optimization, and commercial operations across the firm. This is an exciting opportunity for a collaborative professional who enjoys bringing structure to complex initiatives, leading through change, and helping professionals achieve growth objectives.

The Opportunity

As Manager, Business Development & Pricing, you will play a pivotal role in supporting the firm's strategic growth initiatives. Acting as a trusted advisor to lawyers, practice groups, and internal stakeholders, you will help translate strategy into action by driving business development programs, managing pricing workflows, supporting proposal development, and contributing to a high-performing team.

This role is highly collaborative in nature and requires an individual who can move comfortably between practice areas, communicate clearly, anticipate needs, manage competing priorities, and provide thoughtful solutions in a fast-paced professional services environment.

You will provide leadership to a team of professionals while working closely with departments across the firm’s offices.

Key Responsibilities
  • Support the implementation of firm-wide business development strategies and growth initiatives.
  • Partner with lawyers and practice groups to enhance client development activities and identify opportunities for growth.
  • Coordinate and manage pricing activities, including annual rate reviews, client pricing arrangements, alternative fee arrangements (AFAs), and RFP pricing submissions.
  • Collaborate with Finance and firm leadership to develop pricing recommendations and support informed decision-making.
  • Lead and support proposal and RFP development, ensuring high-quality submissions that align with client objectives.
  • Oversee the firm's CRM strategy and adoption efforts, leveraging data to support business development planning and decision-making.
  • Drive process improvements and operational efficiencies across business development and pricing functions.
  • Support change management initiatives related to emerging technologies, evolving client expectations, and business development best practices.
  • Prepare reports, presentations, and recommendations for senior leadership and internal stakeholders.
  • Serve as a key resource for lawyers and internal clients, responding to requests with professionalism, urgency, and sound judgment.
  • Coach, mentor, and develop team members while fostering a collaborative and service-focused culture.
The Ideal Candidate

You are a planner and implementer who enjoys bringing people, processes, and priorities together. You are service-oriented, highly organized, and naturally collaborative, with the ability to build credibility and influence across diverse stakeholder groups.

You thrive in environments where responsiveness, professionalism, and quality matter. You are comfortable leading teams through change, and balancing strategic objectives with day-to-day operational demands.

Most importantly, you are someone who anticipates needs, approaches challenges with solutions, and can be relied upon to deliver results.

Qualifications
  • Post-secondary education in Business, Marketing, Commerce, Communications, Finance, or a related discipline.
  • Experience in business development, commercial operations, client service, project management, pricing, account management, marketing, or a related function.
  • Experience working within a professional services environment is considered a strong asset.
  • Previous people leadership experience, including coaching, mentoring, or managing direct reports.
  • Strong project management skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines.
  • Excellent written communication and proposal-writing abilities.
  • Demonstrated ability to influence and collaborate effectively across multiple stakeholder groups.
  • Strong business acumen and comfort working with financial and operational information.
  • Experience implementing CRM or similar systems would be considered an asset.
  • Proven ability to lead teams through organizational change and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Exceptional organizational skills, attention to detail, and problem-solving abilities.
