Job description

Manager - Accounting, Assurance & Tax (Public Practice)
Role Overview

This is a client-facing Manager role within public practice, focused on delivering high-quality accounting, assurance, and tax services. The role blends technical accounting, advisory work, and team leadership.

You will review compilation and review engagement financial statements, prepare and review personal and corporate tax returns, and provide accounting and bookkeeping guidance to a diverse client base. You will also serve as a key client contact and report directly to the Partners.

A key part of this role includes mentoring junior staff, reviewing their work, and maintaining strong file quality and compliance standards.

Workplace Culture & Work-Life Balance

This is a supportive, close-knit, and people-first environment where collaboration and professionalism go hand in hand.

The firm places strong emphasis on:

  • Maintaining a respectful and balanced workload
  • Encouraging efficiency over long hours
  • Supporting time off in lieu of busy season overtime
  • Providing flexibility in day-to-day scheduling
  • Promoting a culture where people are trusted, not micromanaged

During peak periods (Feb-Apr), additional hours may be required; however, overtime is recognized and banked for time off in quieter periods, including summer flexibility. The office also closes annually between Christmas and New Year to support full downtime for the team.

Overall, this is a stable and balanced public practice environment where long-term retention, professional growth, and sustainable workload management are prioritized.

Key Responsibilities
  • Review compilation and review engagement financial statements
  • Prepare and/or review personal and corporate tax returns
  • Provide advisory support on accounting, tax, and bookkeeping matters
  • Manage multiple client files and ensure deadlines and compliance requirements are met
  • Act as primary client contact for assigned engagements
  • Mentor, train, and review junior staff work
  • Support partners with file management and technical guidance
  • Maintain high standards of accuracy, quality, and professionalism
Qualifications & Experience
  • 5+ years of progressive public accounting experience
  • 1-2+ years in a managerial or supervisory role preferred
  • Strong experience with compilation and review engagements
  • Experience preparing personal and corporate tax returns
  • Proven ability to mentor and review junior staff
  • Strong client-facing and advisory skills
  • Excellent organizational and time management abilities
  • Proficiency with CaseWare, TaxCycle, QuickBooks, Sage, and Microsoft Office
Compensation
  • Performance bonus (up to ~10% in year one)
  • Semi-annual performance review structure
  • Hybrid role
  • First 3 months fully in-office for onboarding
  • Standard hours: 9:00 AM - 5:00 PM (flexible)
  • Busy season (Feb-Apr): ~10 additional hours/week
  • Overtime is banked and taken as time off in quieter periods
  • Office closed between Christmas and New Year
Team & Reporting Structure
  • Reports directly to Partners
  • Works closely with a team of ~12-13 professionals
  • Responsible for reviewing work and supporting junior staff development
Professional Development Support
  • CPA designation and professional fees support (partially or fully covered depending on tenure)
  • 50% reimbursement for approved professional courses (CPA, CFP, etc.)
  • Paid exam time and study support
  • Continuing education support for approved programs
Ideal Fit
  • Strong public practice background (experience prioritized over designation alone)
