Job description

Carleton Hatchery is seeking a maintenance worker with mechanical aptitude for a general maintenance role within a fast-paced food processing environment. The successful candidate will assist Maintenance Technicians in maintaining high standards of equipment and building upkeep, minimizing downtime, and adhering to safety, quality, and legislative standards.

Responsibilities

• Comply with safety, federal, state, local, and environmental regulations.
• Perform repairs and installations on production machinery, bearings, seals, and alignments following recommended procedures.
• Maintain RTU filters, belts, and perform general maintenance tasks.
• Carry out preventive maintenance in production and common areas.
• Diagnose mechanical faults using inspection and appropriate tools.
• Use and maintain hand and power tools efficiently and safely.
• Replace solenoids, motors, pumps, and gearboxes.
• Ensure equipment safety features are functional, including sensors and switches.
• Handle electrical tasks such as replacing lamps, ballasts, and working with thermostats and sensors.
• Plan and organize work efficiently.
• Maintain clean and safe work areas, managing waste appropriately.
• Report defects and issues affecting production to supervisors.
• Assist with other maintenance duties as needed.
• Coordinate with contractors and oversee activities as required.
• Complete tasks assigned by Maintenance or Operations Managers.

Requirements

• Respond promptly and courteously to production requests.
• Experience in millwright work, welding, and 5th class power engineering is preferred.
• Willingness to work overtime, weekends, and be on-call/support as needed.
• Ability to work shifts.
• Grade 12 education mandatory.
• 1 to 3 years of related experience.
• Experience in a food processing plant is an asset.
• Experience with live animals and proper handling is preferred.
• Success-driven with a positive attitude.
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
• Strong communication skills.
• Good safety record.
• Flexible and adaptable to changing environments.
