Job summary

ALS Canada Ltd. seeks a Facilities Maintenance Technician to perform hands‑on maintenance across building, property, mechanical, and equipment systems. You will work with internal teams and service providers to keep a safe, functional facility.

The role requires strong mechanical aptitude, ability to read technical manuals, and comfort coordinating with trades. Candidates should have 2–3 years in similar roles and a valid BC driver’s licence. On‑site work in Canada with shift flexibility.

Qualifications

• Minimum of two to three years of experience in building maintenance, mechanical maintenance, equipment repair, facilities operations, or related field.
• One or more of the following certifications or designations: BOMA Building Operator Certificate, SMT or SMA designation, trade certification or equivalent training.
• Valid Class 5 British Columbia driver's licence or equivalent provincial licence.
• Ability to coordinate with trades, contractors, and service providers to maintain facilities.

Responsibilities

• Support day‑to‑day operation, maintenance, and upkeep of buildings, grounds, facility systems, and equipment.
• Perform routine building repairs, HVAC related tasks, basic plumbing, and general maintenance.

About the Role

Reporting to the Facilities Manager, the Facilities Maintenance Technician performs hands‑on maintenance across building, property, mechanical, and equipment systems. The successful candidate will work with internal teams, contractors, trades, and service providers to maintain a safe, functional, and well‑maintained facility. This is a hands‑on position requiring sound judgment, mechanical aptitude, strong organisational skills, and the ability to work independently while supporting a collaborative facilities team.

Key Responsibilities

Facility and Grounds Support

• Support the day‑to‑day operation, maintenance, and upkeep of buildings, grounds, facility systems, and equipment.
• Perform general property maintenance, including the upkeep of indoor and outdoor areas and waste removal.
• Complete minor building repairs, including painting, basic carpentry, and basic plumbing.
• Perform minor mechanical maintenance and repairs, including replacing belts, bearings, and shafts and completing basic equipment repairs.

Equipment & Laboratory Upkeep

• Perform routine maintenance on laboratory and facility equipment, including changing air and water filters, cleaning scrubber nozzles, and greasing bearings.
• Operate a forklift to move pallets, equipment, waste, and other materials as required.

Coordination & Procurement

• Assist the Facilities Manager and Facilities Coordinator with maintenance activities and facility‑related projects.
• Coordinate with trades, contractors, and service providers for maintenance, repairs, inspections, and specialised work.
• Purchase and transport building materials, tools, equipment, and maintenance supplies.
• Determine required materials and supplies and place orders in accordance with established processes.
• Assess maintenance requirements and determine when qualified trades or contractors are required.
• Support facility improvement, maintenance, and construction projects.

Documentation, Safety & Support

• Maintain accurate maintenance records, logbooks, work orders, schedules, and documentation.
• Follow established procedures, maintenance schedules, and quality standards.
• Comply with ALS health, safety, environmental, and operational policies and procedures.
• Perform other related duties as assigned.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Technical & Mechanical Aptitude

• Working knowledge of HVAC systems and DDC control systems and basic plumbing knowledge.
• Familiarity with mechanical, electrical, and building systems.

Troubleshooting & Problem Solving

• Demonstrated ability to perform general building repairs, routine maintenance and troubleshoot problems using sound judgement.
• Ability to read and interpret technical manuals, instructions and equipment documents.

Software & Systems

• Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications.
• Experience using a computerised maintenance management system, such as MaintainX, is an asset.

Work Style & Communication

Strong verbal and written communication skills. Excellent time management, organisational, and prioritisation skills with the ability to manage multiple tasks in a fast‑paced environment. Ability to work independently with minimal supervision while contributing effectively as part of a team.

Safety & Compliance

Demonstrated integrity, reliability, initiative, and commitment to workplace safety. Ability and willingness to obtain any additional certifications required for the role (including forklift certification or operating experience, which is an asset; training will be provided as required).

Required Qualifications

• A minimum of two to three years of experience in building maintenance, mechanical maintenance, equipment repair, facilities operations, or a related field.
• One or more of the following:
• BOMA Building Operator Certificate
• SMT or SMA designation
• Trade certification or relevant formal technical training;
• or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
• Valid Class 5 British Columbia driver's licence, or equivalent provincial licence.

Physical Demands

Physical Demand & Mobility

• Stamina & Movement: Ability to perform work involving standing, walking, bending, kneeling, reaching, climbing, and working around equipment and machinery.
• Heavy Lifting: Ability to lift and move materials weighing up to 50 pounds, with appropriate assistance or equipment when required.
• Work Environment: Ability to work in confined or small areas and at various heights and in environments where noise, dust, chemicals, and other industrial or laboratory‑related conditions may be present.
• Manual Dexterity: Hand‑eye coordination and manual dexterity to perform detailed, and hands‑on maintenance tasks.
• PPE: Ability to wear all required PPE, including safety footwear, gloves, eye protection, hearing protection, and respiratory protection where applicable.

Schedule & Availability

• On‑Call Coverage: Availability to participate in emergency on‑call coverage, including evenings and weekends, as required by operational needs.
• Shift Work: Availability to work rotating shifts, including days, afternoons, overnight shifts, weekends, and statutory holidays if required.

Our Benefits

• An estimated hourly pay of $25.58 CAD at the time of posting. Individual compensation is determined by factors such as job‑related skills, relevant experience, education and/or training.
