Job summary

ALS is seeking a Lab Assistant to support preparation, analysis, and disposal of client samples in a regulated lab environment. You will perform weighing tasks with attention to accuracy and follow the ALS Health and Safety Program.

The role involves routine lab housekeeping, inventory tracking, and training new staff within the weighing room, while maintaining data records and reporting issues to supervisors.

Qualifications

  • Grade 12 education or equivalent.
  • Knowledge in general sciences or analytical chemistry an asset.
  • Minimum of 3 months laboratory experience in analytical chemistry or related field an asset.

Responsibilities

  • Weigh samples, scan boxes to location and return them after weighing.
  • Sort and organize boxes and labels.
  • Maintain cleanliness of lab wares and return to proper locations.
  • Ensure balance stations are clean and ready for use.
  • Report equipment and balance issues to supervisor.
  • Maintain balance verification records and training of new staff.

About The Position

As a Lab Assistant, your primary role will be to assist with the preparation, analysis, and disposal of client samples and under supervision perform weighing task procedures using correct methods in accordance with the established procedures and schedules while ensuring analytical quality, and adhere to safe laboratory practices by working in accordance with the ALS Health and Safety Program.

Specific Responsibilities
  • Weigh samples, look for boxes, scan boxes to location and return them to the proper location after weighing;
  • Sort and organize boxes and labels;
  • Clean and maintain orders of lab wares and ensure they are returned to the proper location;
  • Adhere to clean-up schedules to ensure that balances and weigh stations are clean, tidy and in working order;
  • Perform other clean-up tasks as required;
  • Maintain inventory records for standard materials & certain weighing room items;
  • Report equipment/ balance breakdowns to supervisor;
  • Report any quality issue (e.g., coarse sample, mix-up) to supervisors and/or lead hands;
  • Maintaining balance verification records and ensure the staff in the weighing room adhere to all routine balance maintenance schedules;
  • Perform fluoride sample transferring;
  • Perform inventory count and advise supervisor or shift leaders of low levels of standard materials and weighing room items when required;
  • Responsible for training new staff in the weighing room;
  • Run specific gravity and moisture analysis;
  • Assist in certain leaching and filtration procedures when required;
  • Observe established safety regulations and comply with all ALS health and safety policies and procedures;
  • Other duties as assigned by the Supervisor or Manager.
Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
  • Organized and highly motivated individual;
  • Excellent hand eye coordination;
  • Detail oriented individual with a strong commitment to quality;
  • Ability to work independently or as part of a team;
  • Ability to effectively handle a high volume of work and time critical issues;
  • Basic English communication (written and verbal) and interpersonal skills;
  • Basic computer skills including MS Word, Excel and Outlook;
  • Familiarity with any of the following would be an asset:
  • Calibration of routine instruments
  • Evaluation of QC Checks and calibration standards
  • Analyses of all partial and total digestions
  • Chemical and physical interferences in geological analyses
  • Detection limits
  • Precision
  • Calibration
Required Qualifications
  • Grade 12 education or equivalent required;
  • Knowledge in general sciences or analytical chemistry an asset;
  • Minimum of 3 months laboratory experience in analytical chemistry or related field an asset.
Physical Demands
  • Ability to lift up to 20lbs;
  • Ability to sit and/or stand at a computer for up to 7.5 hours;
  • Manual dexterity to perform repetitive tasks.
