Job summary

Soufflet Malt is seeking a Maintenance Supervisor for the Thunder Bay plant to lead a team of about 11 unionized trades and ensure timely, safe maintenance of production equipment. Reporting to the Maintenance Manager, you will drive reliability and uptime while coordinating routine and major repairs.

You will collaborate on capital projects, uphold safety and food-safety standards, and foster continuous improvement in maintenance practices and team performance at the site.

Qualifications

  • Supervisory experience in a maintenance environment.
  • Knowledge of preventative maintenance programs.
  • Working knowledge of the malting/brewing process.
  • Ability to plan and implement maintenance repairs and capital projects.
  • Knowledge of Safety in the work environment.
  • Familiarity with union employee relations.
  • Computer Skills: Microsoft Office Suite, Database software, Manufacturing software, Timekeeping software.
  • Familiarity with automated process technology.
  • Experience with computerized preventive maintenance programs.
  • Demonstrated decision-maker with strong leadership and interpersonal skills.
  • 5+ years experience in Plant Maintenance, preferably in food/grain processing.

Responsibilities

  • Supervise approximately 11 unionized skilled trades employees.
  • Assist Maintenance manager with developing and managing capital projects while prioritizing safety and continuous improvement.
  • Direct and steer maintenance staff in scheduling, preventive maintenance, repair of production equipment, and issue resolution.
  • Lead plant operations to maintain efficient operation and communicate knowledge to staff.
  • Maintain equipment and parts inventory to minimize downtime and ensure spare parts are available.
  • Assist with scheduling and supervising major equipment repairs, overhauls and rebuilding to stay operational and safe.
  • Ensure staff are trained in health and environmental practices within the plant and Maintenance Department.
  • Carry out interviewing, training, performance management, labour relations, budget and reporting.
  • Adhere to food safety, quality, and health/safety policies and regulatory requirements.

About the Role

Reporting to the Maintenance Manager at Canada Malting Co. Limited, a company by Soufflet Malt in our Thunder Bay plant, the Maintenance Supervisor assumes the role of a technical manager and has responsibility for ensuring timely and quality repair of equipment and plant machinery to minimize downtime for safe and efficient operation. The role takes initiative to ensure operation are in compliance with safety standards and environment practices.

RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Supervise approximately 11 unionized skilled trades employees
  • Assist Maintenance manager with developing and managing capital projects while keeping safety and continuous improvement at the forefront.
  • Direct andsteer maintenance staff in everyday scheduling, preventative maintenance, repair of all production equipment, and resolve equipment-related issues.
  • Acts as leader in Plant operations to keep workforce focused on efficient operation, convey knowledge/information to employees, maintain awareness within work environment to anticipate future issues.
  • Maintain equipment and parts inventory using available resources to continuously minimize downtime while ensuring spare parts are organized and available.
  • Assist with schedule and supervising major equipment repairs, overhauls and rebuilding to ensure that it is fully operational and safe to operate and within schedule requirements.
  • Ensure staff are well trained in health and standards and proper environmental practices within the plant and the Maintenance Department.
  • Carries out other managerial responsibilities including interviewing, training, performance management, labour relations, budget and reporting.
  • Adhere to all company food safety, quality, and health and safey policies and procedures, as well as applicable regulatory requirements, to ensure safe work practices and the production of safe, compliant products.
SKILLS & EXPERIENCE
  • Supervisory experience preferably in a maintenance environment.
  • Knowledge of preventative maintenance programs and implementation.
  • Working knowledge of the malting/brewing process.
  • Ability to plan and implement maintenance repairs and capital projects.
  • Knowledge of Safety in the work environment.
  • Familiarity with union employee relations.
  • Computer Skills:
    Microsoft Office Suite, Database software, Manufacturing software, Timekeeping software
  • Familiarity with automated process technology.
  • Experience working in a computerized preventive maintenance program.
  • A demonstrated decision-maker with excellent investigative and problem-solving skills.A demonstratedmanager with excellent interpersonal, organizational and communication skills who easily interacts with others and is adept at leading and motivating a team.
  • 5+ years experience in Plant Maintenance, preferably in a food or grain-processing environment.
  • Working knowledge of the malting/brewing process would be an asset.
EDUCATION
  • College diploma in a related field or Journeyman qualification.
  • Journeyman Electrical qualifications is considered an asset.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
  • Travel on foot is required throughout the plant site. In operation buildings employees are required to access multiple levels using stairs, elevators and ladders. Work will be a combination of indoor and outdoor environment. Work must be performed in all weather conditions, dusty, wet and other conditions.
