Job summary

Darling International Canada Inc. is seeking a Maintenance Manager for our Moorefield, Ontario facility. You will lead the maintenance department, ensure safe, reliable operation of plant equipment, and drive preventive/predictive maintenance programs in compliance with Ontario regulations.

You will oversee capital planning, budgeting, and cross‑functional collaboration to support production and continuous improvement.

Qualifications

  • University degree in Mechanical, Industrial, or Electrical Engineering.
  • Minimum 3-5 years of Maintenance Manager or equivalent leadership experience.
  • Experience in rendering, food processing, or high‑compliance environments is an asset.
  • Strong knowledge of OHSA, CFIA, HACCP and related regulations.
  • Proven coaching, mentoring, and team development abilities.
  • Ability to multi‑task in a fast‑paced environment.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the maintenance department and supervise the Maintenance Supervisor and team.
  • Develop preventive/predictive maintenance schedules and oversee work orders.
  • Manage CMMS records, spare parts inventory, and uptime initiatives.
  • Lead safety initiatives, audits, and incident investigations.
  • Own budgeting, capital planning, and cost control for maintenance.
  • Collaborate with Production, QA, HR, and other functions for reliability.

JOB SUMMARY

We have a Full‑time, Maintenance Manager position located at our Moorefield facility. Reporting to the Plant Manager and directing the maintenance team, The Maintenance Manager is responsible for the safe, reliable, and efficient operation of all plant equipment and infrastructure at the Moorefield, Ontario rendering facility. This role leads the Maintenance department, oversees preventive and predictive maintenance programs, ensures adherence to Ontario's regulatory, environmental and quality compliance requirements, and supports plant production through effective leadership, technical expertise, and cross‑functional collaboration.

This position is an active member of the Plant Operations Committee and contributes plant strategy, capital planning, and continuous improvement initiatives.

Leadership & People Management
  • Provide day‑to‑day leadership, coaching, and direction to the Maintenance Supervisor and all Maintenance team members.
  • Conduct daily plant walkthroughs to identify hazards, equipment concerns, and to follow up on open work orders and employee concerns.
  • Ensure effective communication within the department, including daily meetings, toolbox talks, maintenance updates and shift handover processes.
  • Conduct mid‑year and annual performance reviews, delivering timely coaching, feedback, recognition and corrective action when required.
  • Review and approve time and attendance (Kronos) for all Maintenance employees.
  • Partner with Human Resources on training, development plans, succession planning, and addressing performance issues.
  • Promote and maintain a positive, safety‑focused, collaborative work culture that supports safety, accountability, and continuous improvement, in compliance with the Ontario Human Rights Code and company policies.
Maintenance Operations & Planning
  • Manage Preventive and Predictive Maintenance - ensuring schedules, work orders, and planning tools are effectively executed to ensure optimal equipment reliability and minimal downtime.
  • Develop weekly and monthly maintenance schedules that minimize downtime, support throughput targets, and control overtime, aligned with production requirements.
  • Manage work order backlog, equipment history, and performance tracking through the site's CMMS (e.g., Maintenance Connect or equivalent).
  • Monitor equipment performance, reliability trends, and work order backlog; implement corrective actions where required.
  • Lead root‑cause analysis (RCA) on recurrent equipment failures and implement long‑term corrective solutions.
  • Ensure maintenance procedures adhere to Ontario regulatory requirements regarding equipment guarding, lockout/tagout, and electrical/mechanical safety.
  • Manage spare parts inventory and ensure key components are available to support uptime.
  • Ensure accurate records are maintained in the CMMS and any other applicable systems.
Budgeting, Capital Planning & Projects
  • Develop and manage the annual Maintenance operating budget, including labour, spare parts, contractors, and utilities.
  • Prepare capital expenditure business cases and proposals.
  • Collaborate with relevant stakeholders in leading capital projects; manage project timelines, and ensure safe, compliant execution of capital and improvement projects ensuring compliance with Ontario Building Code, electrical code (Ontario Electrical Safety Code), and ESA requirements.
  • Manage permit‑to‑work processes and oversee contractor work, ensuring compliance with site policies, safety and legislative requirements, and quality expectations.
Health & Safety Leadership
  • Champion a strong safety culture, ensuring maintenance work is in compliance with the Ontario Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA) and Reg. 851 – Industrial Establishments.
  • Ensure maintenance activities and team adhere to:
    • Lockout/Tagout requirements
    • Machine guarding standards
    • Confined space entry regulations
    • Working at heights legislation
    • Work permit requirements
  • Lead safety‑related work orders and ensure hazards are promptly reported and corrected.
  • Report and document all first aids, medical aids, and lost‑time injuries in accordance with policy and WSIB reporting requirements.
  • Participate in investigations and ensure corrective actions are completed/implemented.
  • Complete safety scorecard reporting and contribute to corporate health & safety initiatives.
  • Support Joint Health & Safety Committee (JHSC) activities.
  • Ensure all maintenance staff complete required Ontario‑specific safety training (e.g., worker awareness, supervisor awareness, Violence and Harassment, WHMIS).
  • Ensure Maintenance activities comply with provincial legislation and internal safety standards.
Quality & Regulatory Compliance
  • Ensure maintenance activities support the facility's compliance with CFIA, HACCP, GMP, SOP, and sanitation requirements by ensuring equipment is maintained in safe and operable condition.
  • Support environmental compliance by ensuring maintenance tasks related to environmental systems (e.g., wastewater equipment, air handling, odour controls) are performed safely and correctly.
  • Ensure maintenance activities support audit readiness and the facility's feed safety and environmental management systems.
  • Support audits and contribute to corrective action plans related to maintenance controls and plant equipment.
Cross‑Functional Collaboration
  • Work closely with Production, PSQA, HR, Environmental, Logistics and Health & Safety to support plant performance, site initiatives and ensure coordinated plant operations.
  • Serve as an active member of the Plant Operations Committee.
  • Support operations through troubleshooting, reliability improvements, and ensuring alignment across departments.
Other Responsibilities
  • Participate in emergency response as required.
  • Participate in emergency response planning and incident management.
  • Support corporate initiatives and continuous improvement programs.
  • Perform additional duties as required based on operational/business needs.
Education and/or Work Experience Requirements
  • University degree in Mechanical, Industrial, or Electrical Engineering or College diploma/technology certification in a related discipline; or equivalent experience, considered an asset.
  • Relevant trade certification considered an asset (Millwright, Electrician, Steamfitter/Pipefitter, Machinist, Tool & Die) is required.
  • Minimum 3-5 years of Maintenance Manager or equivalent leadership experience in a manufacturing environment.
  • Experience in rendering, food processing, or related high‑compliance environments considered an asset.
  • Strong knowledge of health & safety, HACCP, CFIA, MECP regulations and requirements.
  • Demonstrated resilience with conflicting priorities and uncertain situations.
  • Enthusiastic, positive and self‑motivated.
  • Ability to work well in a team setting as well as independently.
  • Ability to prioritize day‑to‑day tasks and adapt to changing priorities.
  • Strong analytical, time management, and organizational skills.
  • Strong coaching/mentoring skills to assist with staff development.
  • Proven ability to multi‑task in a fast‑paced environment.
  • Computer competency including knowledge of Microsoft Office applications.
  • Maintenance Connect or comparable EM program knowledge considered an asset.
  • Verbal and written communication skills required.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and cooperate with other functional business areas, across Corporate teams, regulatory bodies, communities, and local businesses.
  • Previous Capital Project Management considered an asset.
  • Proven ability to implement processes, policies and procedures.
  • High degree of self‑awareness and accountability and ability to hold team members and self‑accountable.
  • Ability to delegate and engage team members in Company, departmental and personal goals.
Physical Requirements
  • Ability to safely and successfully perform the essential job functions consistent with the AODA, ESA, OHSA and other federal, and provincial standards, including meeting qualitative and/or quantitative productivity standards.
  • Ability to maintain regular, punctual attendance consistent with the AODA, ESA, OHSA and other federal, and provincial standards.
  • Must be able to walk through plant areas multiple times daily (through plant, offices, and to maintenance several times per day).
  • Ability to climb stairs and access elevated or restricted spaces when safe and required.
  • Must be able to lift and carry up to 20 lbs.
  • Ability to sit or stand for extended periods.
  • Clear verbal and written communication skills.
  • Must be able to crouch, kneel, bend, twist, push/pull occasionally.
  • Ability to work in hot, cold, noisy, or wet plant conditions as needed.
