Job summary

The City of Red Deer is hiring a permanent, full-time Maintenance Planner responsible for ensuring wastewater treatment plant maintenance is fully planned, resourced, and scheduled. You will develop work packages, estimates, and schedules to improve workforce efficiency and asset reliability, while ensuring regulatory compliance and public health protection.

• Formal training in maintenance planning and asset management principles is an asset.
• Equivalent combinations of education and directly related industrial maintenance planning experience may be considered.

Responsibilities

• Develop comprehensive maintenance work packages with scope, safety, procedures, drawings, tools, materials, permits and resources.
• Prepare labour, material, and duration estimates for efficient planning.
• Conduct field inspections to verify scope, equipment condition, access, and resource needs.
• Create and coordinate weekly, short-term, long-range, shutdown, and outage maintenance schedules with Operations and contractors.
• Maintain and optimize CMMS data, preventive maintenance programs, and asset history documentation.
• Coordinate inventory, materials, critical spare parts, and purchasing activities.
• Analyze maintenance performance and KPIs to identify continuous improvement opportunities.

The Opportunity:

The City of Red Deer is currently hiring a permanent, full-time Maintenance Planner. The Maintenance Planner is responsible for ensuring maintenance work at the Wastewater Treatment Plant is fully planned, resourced, scheduled, and documented prior to execution. This position improves workforce efficiency, increases productive tool time, supports asset reliability, and enables supervisory staff to focus on leadership, safety, and long-term maintenance strategies. They ensure maintenance activities support regulatory compliance, environmental protection, and protection of public health.

• Develop comprehensive maintenance work packages, including scope, safety requirements, procedures, drawings, tools, materials, permits, and required trade resources.




• Prepare labour, material, and duration estimates to support efficient maintenance planning and execution.




• Conduct field inspections to verify job scope, equipment condition, access requirements, and resource needs prior to scheduling work.




• Create and coordinate weekly, short-term, long-range, shutdown, and outage maintenance schedules in collaboration with Operations and contractors.




• Maintain and optimize CMMS data, including preventative maintenance programs, work orders, equipment records, and asset history documentation.




• Coordinate inventory, materials, critical spare parts, and purchasing activities to ensure maintenance readiness and minimize work delays.




• Analyze maintenance performance, reliability trends, and key performance indicators (KPIs) to identify continuous improvement opportunities and support asset management strategies.

As our preferred candidate, you will have:

Education

  • Journeyperson Certificate in a recognized 4-year industrial trade (Millwright, Electrician, Instrumentation & Control Technician, or Plumbing) from an accredited program.

  
  

  • Formal training in maintenance planning and asset management principles (e.g., PEMAC MMP modules or equivalent recognized reliability certification) is considered an asset.

  
  

  • Equivalent combinations of education and directly related industrial maintenance planning experience may be considered.

  
  
  
  

Experience

• Minimum five (5) years progressively responsible experience in an industrial maintenance environment.

  
  
  
  

  • Experience in maintenance planning, work package development, scheduling, or asset reliability analysis within a regulated industrial or municipal utility environment.

  
  

  • Demonstrated experience interpreting technical drawings, specifications, P&IDs, and equipment documentation.

  
  
  
  

Knowledge & Technical Competence

• Working knowledge of MMS systems.

  
  
  
  

  • Knowledge of preventative and predictive maintenance programs and reliability-centered maintenance principles.

  
  

  • Knowledge of industrial safety practices including lockout/tagout, confined space entry, hazard assessments, and safe work permitting.

  
  

  • Understanding of municipal wastewater treatment operations or similar regulated process environments.

  
  
  
  

Certifications & Requirements

• Valid Class 5 Alberta Driver's Licence.

  
  
  
  

  • Ability to obtain and maintain required safety certifications (Confined Space Entry, Lockout/Tagout, Respiratory Protection, Fall Protection, First Aid, etc.).

  
  
  
  

Required Skills

• Ability to plan, organize, and sequence complex maintenance activities within established policies and approved priorities.




• Ability to analyze asset data, maintenance history, and performance trends and make sound technical recommendations to improve reliability and efficiency.




• Ability to provide functional direction and coordination to trades, operators, contractors, and vendors related to planned maintenance activities, without formal supervisory authority.




• Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to prepare detailed work packages, technical documentation, reports, and correspondence.




• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, contractors, vendors, regulatory representatives, and other stakeholders.




• Proficiency in the use of Computerized Maintenance Management Systems (CMMS), databases, spreadsheets, and standard office software applications.




• Demonstrated mechanical and technical aptitude, including the ability to read and interpret blueprints, drawings, schematics, P&IDs, specifications, and technical manuals.




• Ability to troubleshoot diverse maintenance planning and coordination issues where precedent may not always exist and exercise sound technical judgment.




• Working knowledge of applicable industrial safety standards, regulatory requirements, and the Approval to Operate as they relate to maintenance activities.




• Demonstrated commitment to safe work practices, including proper use of personal protective equipment and safety monitoring devices.

Remuneration:

$43.03 to $45.29 per hour.

Hours of Work:

80 hours biweekly, Monday to Friday. Some evening and weekend work may be required.
