Job summary

Septodont, a global leader in dental products, operates a Cambridge, Ontario site (Novocol Pharma) focused on sterile injectable cartridges and roboticized equipment. The Maintenance Automation Technician will troubleshoot and repair automated production systems, perform preventive maintenance, and support continuous improvement within GMP guidelines.

The role requires 4–5 years in maintenance of complex automation, PLCs, and electrical systems, with strong teamwork and communication.

Qualifications

  • Minimum 4-5 years of maintenance experience in mechanical, computerized, controls and electronic systems with complex automation, preferably GMP governed
  • Proficiency in reading electrical diagrams/schematics and PID drawings
  • Ability to travel internationally occasionally to other Septodont/NHI sites or suppliers
  • Strong communication skills and ability to work in cross-functional teams
  • Demonstrated troubleshooting and problem-solving abilities
  • Experience coaching and mentoring junior maintenance staff

Responsibilities

  • Troubleshoot and repair production machinery and automation systems including PLCs, drives, and controllers
  • Perform preventive maintenance per SOPs and report deficiencies
  • Diagnose faults with testing devices and ML PLCs; isolate problems and implement fixes
  • Assist with on-the-job training for new employees
  • Collaborate with Maintenance staff to ensure safety, GMP compliance, and quality standards
  • Lead or participate in continuous improvement projects and maintenance shutdowns

We have an opportunity for a Maintenance Automation Technician

Shift Available:
  • Day Shift - Monday to Friday - 6am to 2pm

  • Night Shift - Sunday to Thursday - 10pm to 6am - Shift Premium $3/hour

POSITION SUMMARY

The Maintenance Automation Technician is accountable to the Maintenance Supervisor for all activities related to troubleshooting and repair of production machinery and systems as well as completion of necessary preventative maintenance; and has a dotted line reporting relationship to the Production Manager.

PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Responds promptly and acts independently and autonomously to troubleshoot issues related to mechanical, computerized, controls and electronic systems having complex automation and inter-related circuits (i.e. PLCs, controllers, drives, electronic circuits, industrial PC’s) in order to determine best course of action to address breakdowns and repairs.

  • Performs routine diagnostic checks on automated systems, monitor automated systems,mechanical systems, including pneumatics and hydraulics.Isolate problems and perform repairs

  • Uses various test instruments and PLC programs to diagnose problems.

  • Applies the knowledge and understanding of industrial electronic devices and systems, digital and analog circuits during the troubleshooting process.

  • Make use of hand and machine tools in thetroubleshooting/repairprocesses

  • Assures that all electrical and automation work is completed according to respective codes.

  • Inspects and tests operation of machinery and systems to diagnose faults using testing devices. Repairs and adjusts system components or remove and replace defective parts.

  • Assists with on-the-job training for new employees to explain policies, work procedures, and to demonstrate use and maintenance of equipment.

  • Works closely in a collaborative manner with all Maintenance staff

  • Performs preventive maintenance according to the SOPs and reports all deficiencies or unsafe working conditions found to Maintenance Supervisor

  • Participates on continuous improvement projects as required. Executes related assignments.

  • Participates in the Maintenance Shutdown activities working independently or as part of a team on Maintenance assignments.

  • Observes and supports all safety guidelines and regulations.

  • Demonstrates and follows the Company’s mission, vision and values, policies, and current standard business practices.

  • Follows GMP and regulatory requirements and ensures quality standards are met.

  • Knowledge of GMP and other related regulations.

  • Experience coaching and mentoring junior Maintenance staff.

  • Performs other related duties as required.

BASIC REQUIREMENTS
Education
  • Technology Diploma in Electrical, Mechatronics, System Design or

  • Electro-Mechanical Technician / Technologist Degree complimented by formal Automation Training or

  • Technology Diploma in Electrical, Controls and Automation

  • Industrial electrician 309A OR 442A license

Experience
  • Minimum of 4-5 years of Maintenance experience of mechanical, computerized, controls and electronic systems having complex automation, preferably in GMP governed industries

  • Proficiency in reading and interpreting architectural, mechanical, piping, pneumatic drawings, instrumentation drawings (PID), PLC ladder logics

  • Proficiency in reading and interpreting and understanding of electrical diagrams / schematics.

  • Maintain annual Gowning Certification.

  • Proficiency in MS Office and knowledge of maintenance related programs.

  • Ability to travel internationally occasionally to other Septodont /NHI sites or suppliers.

  • Strong communication skills, with the ability to work within cross-functional teams.

  • Ability to work under pressure under tight timeframes.

  • Effective interpersonal skills with the ability to work in a team environment.

  • Proven analytical, troubleshooting and problem solving skills.

  • Ability to work independently in a fast paced environment.

  • Effective organizational, time management and detail-orientation skills.

  • Ability to work with minimal supervision, taking initiative and prioritizing work
