Job summary

The House of Commons Administration is building a pool of candidates for Maintenance and Material Handling roles to support six Parliamentary Precinct buildings in Ottawa. The team handles custodial cleaning, material handling, room set-ups and event support around the clock.

Positions require physical work and a pre-placement medical/fitness assessment; CSA boots and safety measures apply. Bilingual profiles may be considered; this pool is for anticipatory staffing and future vacancies.

Qualifications

  • Secondary School Diploma or an acceptable combination of education, training and/or relevant experience.
  • Experience in performing industrial or commercial custodial cleaning functions; and/or;
  • Experience in material handling and room set-ups (pick-up, delivery and handling of goods and furniture);
  • Experience in operating a computer in a work environment (e-mail, Internet).
  • Please note that an electronic copy of the certifications will be required to be provided as part of the screening process.

Responsibilities

  • Perform cleaning of indoor spaces to preserve appearance and condition of interior finishes.
  • Provide cleaning services for outdoor courtyards, entrances, food service areas and events.
  • Deliver and pick up materials and supplies; set up rooms and equipment for events; assist with office moves.
  • Contribute to the Greening the Hill program by recycling and composting materials; perform other physical tasks as required.

Job Description

The House of Commons Parliamentary Precinct Operations Services is is currently looking to create a pool of candidates for anticipatory staffing of the Maintenance and Material Handling Person roles.

The Maintenance and Material Handling Services provide a 24-hour, 7-day-a-week operation that includes office cleaning, custodial services, material handling, room set-up services, heritage preservation, a recycling program and special services throughout six Parliamentary Precinct buildings. Some services are extended to several satellite buildings.

As part of this team, you will be accountable for: the provision of quality and effective cleaning of all indoor space for the preservation, appearance and condition of interior finishes within the Parliamentary Campus, quality and effective cleaning services for outdoor courtyards and building entrances, Food Services areas and special events, timely delivery and pick up of materials and supplies, and for timely room set ups and equipment installations for events; performing office moves; making a significant contribution to the Greening the Hill program through the collection of recyclable and compostable materials; and performing, as required, other tasks of a physical nature.

  • Work weekends and shiftwork (day, evening and night);
  • Work overtime or irregular hours, on short notice;
  • Wear CSA-approved boots;
  • Work at heights from 4 to 25 feet.

This position requires extensive physical efforts and therefore, the candidates must successfully pass a pre-placement medical/ physical fitness assessment.

Qualifications
Education:
  • Secondary School Diploma OR an acceptable combination of education, training and/or relevant experience.
Experiences:
  • Experience in performing industrial or commercial custodial cleaning functions; and/or;
  • Experience in material handling and room set-ups (pick-up, delivery and handling of goods and furniture);
  • Experience in operating a computer in a work environment (e-mail, Internet).
Assets:
  • Possess a valid WHMIS 2015 for Workers certification issued as of January 2018 or later;
  • Working at Heights Certification or equivalent;
  • Experience with customer service.
