The “z/OS Systems Programmer” provides the abilities to upgrade, modify, and maintain the operating system through in-depth knowledge of OS programming and software packaging. The ideal candidate can Implement software zaps to extend 3P software, install MVS software into the SOS repository, and create I/O configuration requests on demand. The z/OS Systems Programmer must provide technical support and problem resolution for the following (but not limited to): /OS upgrade support, CPU Hardware Refresh, product upgrades, MVS ProdAdmin requests, complex profiles, and OMVS/Webserver/HTTP/USS Server activities.

Essential Job Functions

  • Install MVS software into SOS repository.
  • Expert in Software Packaging and using SMPE.
  • Implement software following required change process.
  • Execute MOM tickets in preparation for Maintenance IPL's.
  • Complete MVS Product Administration Requests.
  • Complete MVS tasks for system recovery in DR Drills.
  • Skilled in applying license keys for product products.
  • Incident/Problem/Change/Software Asset Mgmt (ITIL).
  • Create I/O Configuration request on demand.
  • Complete z/OS builds and supporting changes for Refresh projects.
  • Complete MVS tasks for migration projects.
  • Complete MVS tasks for LPAR decommissions.
  • Complete MVS tasks for LPAR builds.
  • Complete MVS tasks for CPU Swap Projects.
  • Install/Implement software zaps to extend 3P software.
  • Maintain Complex Profiles.
  • Maintain Asset Center install records for MVS software.
  • Process SMF data.
  • Update and reassemble system exits.
  • Maintain OMVS segments and zFS files.
  • Create zLINUX LPARS.
  • Provide zLINUX technical support.
  • SME in problem resolution - z/LINUX and z/OS.
  • OMVS/Webserver/HTTP/USS Server activities.
  • Participate in Client and Internal Audits and Finding/Vulnerability Remediation’s.
  • Demonstrate REXX/Assembler/ISPF Dialogs writing skills.
  • Perform /OS Upgrade Support.
  • Perform CPU Hardware Refresh.
  • Perform IOGENs.
  • Perform/Maintain Coupling Facility SYSPLEX.
  • Perform Product Upgrades.

Technical Expertise

  • 7+ years’ experience as a z/OS Systems Programmer or commonly associated job role, with at least 3+ years’ experience specifically supporting z/LINUX and z/OS.
  • Incident/Problem/Change/Software Asset Management (ITIL).
  • Demonstrated experience with Disaster Recovery.
  • Have SMPE experience. Have completed packaging of software for upgrade or installs.
  • Interpersonal skills to interact with customers, senior level personnel, and team members.
  • Organization skills to balance and prioritize work.
  • Leadership skills to assist less experienced personnel.
  • Ability to integrate moderately complex hardware and software systems.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to collaborate with team members and clients.
  • Strong leadership skills for mentoring junior personnel.
  • Ability to anticipate problems, resolve ambiguity, and take decisive action.

  • Professional presence and confidence in addressing complex technical challenges.
  • Willingness to travel as needed.

Work Environment

  • This position is 100% remote within Canada.
  • Provide 24/7 on call support – this is part of a shared rotation with teammates.
  • May require on-call work.
  • May require weekend or shift work.
