Job summary

SPM Oil & Gas, a Caterpillar company, seeks a Machinist IV to set up and operate conventional lathes, mills and boring mills to fabricate precision parts. The role requires reading schematics, selecting tools, and maintaining accuracy through the entire process.

The position offers a Monday–Friday schedule with potential overtime; starting pay is $43.85 per hour, with increases based on experience. Relocation and sponsorship are not provided.

Qualifications

  • Must have basic knowledge of Critical Safety Devices.
  • Ability to accurately complete all work-related documents.
  • Understand basic operating principles for all plant machinery.
  • Ability to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions and deal with problems.
  • Must have mechanical aptitude.

Responsibilities

  • Set up and operate conventional lathes, mills, vertical and horizontal boring mills to fabricate metallic and nonmetallic parts.
  • Study blueprints, sketches, drawings, manuals, specifications, or sample parts to determine dimensions and tolerances of finished work pieces.
  • Measure, mark, and scribe dimensions and reference points on material or work pieces as a guide for subsequent machining.
  • Select, align and secure holding fixtures, cutting tools, attachments, accessories, and materials on machines such as mills, lathes and grinders.
  • Calculate and set controls to regulate machining factors such as speed, feed, coolant flow, depth and angle of cut.
  • Verify compliance of finished workpiece to specifications.

Job Summary:

The Machinist IV role is responsible for setting up and operating conventional lathes, mills, vertical and horizontal boring mills to fabricate metallic and nonmetallic parts.

  • Measure, mark, and scribe dimensions and reference points on material or work pieces as a guide for subsequent machining.
  • Select, align and secure holding fixtures, cutting tools, attachments, accessories, and materials on machines such as mills, lathes and grinders.
  • Calculate and set controls to regulate machining factors such as speed, feed, coolant flow, depth and angle of cut.
  • Start and observe machine operation to detect malfunctions or out-of-tolerance machining, adjusting machine controls or control media as required.
  • Verify compliance of finished workpiece to specifications
  • Set up and operate the machine on trial run to verify accuracy of machine settings.
  • Ability to identify worn tooling, installing replacement inserts, grinding wheels and carbide cutters on equipment and maintains daily PM as required.
  • Ability to identify quality-related issues.
  • Demonstrates versatility across multiple machine types.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

  • Journeyman Machinist. Provincial Trade Certification or Red Seal desired. Qualified Machinist apprentices will also be considered.
  • 3+ Years’ experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience

Summary Pay Range:

$43.85 - $50.40

Compensation and benefits offered may vary depending on multiple individualized factors, job level, market location, job-related knowledge, skills, individual performance and experience. Please note that salary is only one component of total compensation at Caterpillar.
