Job summary

Bird Construction is seeking a Mechanical and Electrical Project Manager based in Ottawa. The role leads the daily M&E management, coordinating with design consultants and trade partners, overseeing budget, schedule, quality and safety. Travel to sites is required and a Secret-level security clearance must be maintained.

The successful candidate will drive planning, cost control and subcontract administration while developing the project team and delivering competitive outcomes.

Qualifications

  • Education in a construction-related discipline and progressive experience in General Contracting or large institutional/commercial projects.
  • Strong leadership, project management and problem-solving skills for collaborative delivery.
  • Ability to read contracts, drawings, specs, scopes of work and schedules.
  • Experience with safety, governance, cost control and administration in construction.

Responsibilities

  • Provide safety leadership through Bird Safety Program and monitor safety performance.
  • Plan, schedule, set objectives, and control activities during construction with the Project Team.
  • Assist with optimization of mechanical and electrical design drawings during design and construction phases.
  • Collaborate with engineering consultants to meet Owner requirements and design deliverables.
  • Assist in preparation of mechanical/electrical budgets and cost estimates for preconstruction.
  • Negotiate subcontracts and manage prime/subcontract relationships.
  • Lead and develop project team members with feedback and coaching.
  • Prepare project commissioning plan with Trade Partners and consultants.
  • Foster strong client, consultant, architect and trade partner relationships.

Job description

M&E Project Manager The Mechanical and Electrical Project Manager leads, directs and coordinates the daily management of the Mechanical and Electrical scope of the project. This leadership position is accountable for the overall performance of the scope including costs, schedule, quality, project status, and adherence to company policies and procedures. More importantly, the M&E Project Manager will work collaboratively with the associated Design and Engineering Consultants and associated Trade Partners to manage a successful team and help develop future construction professionals. Please note that this position requires the successful candidate to obtain and maintain a Secret-level security clearance. This role will be based out of our Ottawa office but will need to travel to sites as necessary.

  • Provide safety leadership through the implementation of the Bird Safety Program and the monitoring of the safety performance of the project team and subcontractors.
  • Planning, scheduling, setting objectives, and controlling activities during the construction phase of a project(s) in conjunction with the Project Superintendent and Project Team.
  • Assist with the optimizations of mechanical and electrical design drawings through the progression of the project Design and construction phases.
  • Collaborate with associated Engineering consultants for design deliverables and ensure Owner requirements are met and adhered to.
  • Assist with the preparation of ongoing cost estimates and the preparation of the overall Mechanical and Electrical budget as part of the overall project cost during the preconstruction phase of a project.
  • Assist in the preparation and negotiation of mechanical and electrical subcontracts.
  • Supervision and development of project team members through regular feedback, training and coaching; timely completion of performance evaluations.
  • Administration and management of prime contract and subcontracts associated with Mechanical and Electrical Scope of Work; includes negotiation and awarding of subcontracts for scopes of work, as well as review and evaluation of subcontractor performance.
  • Assist with project budget and billings and work with accounting to ensure timely payment of A/R and A/P.
  • Monthly and quarterly reporting on financial and overall performance of the project to Senior Management.
  • Foster and maintain positive relations and communication with clients, engineering consultants, architects, and trade partners.
  • Prepare, implement, and manage of project Commissioning Plan in conjunction with Trade Partners, the project Commissioning Agent, and consultant/engineering teams.
What We Are Looking For

Institutional and commercial construction background.

Completed education in a construction-related discipline as well as demonstrated, progressive experience in General Contracting, direct project management of large institutional or commercial projects.

Your demonstrated leadership, project management, and problem-solving skills support your collaborative approach to delivering results and developing team members.

Service and results-oriented, you are able to build and steward trust with a broad network of professional colleagues, subcontractors and team members to effect competitive excellence, pride in teamwork and outstanding project delivery.

Ability to read, understand, and interpret contract documents, drawings, specifications, scopes of work, and project schedules.

Excellent computer skills and proficiency with MS Office, including MS Project; experience with the Viewpoint Project Management system will be considered an asset.

A degree and/or related trade experience in building mechanical and electrical systems is required.

5-10 years’ experience in the construction industry working with contractors with relevant work experience in a similar role.

In-depth knowledge of mechanical and electrical systems and how they integrate with construction elements.

Experience with district energy / combined cooling, heating, and power systems is considered an asset.

Demonstrated competence in the areas of safety, workforce management, project execution, cost control, quality, and administration.

A strong leader and problem-solver, you can build and steward trust with clients, subcontractors, and team members to effect competitive excellence and pride in teamwork with outstanding project delivery.

Demonstrated competence in the areas of safety, workforce management, project execution, cost control, quality, and administration.

Gold Seal, LEED, and Sustainability Training will be considered an asset.

Experience in using BIM models will be considered an asset.

Experience working on collaborative construction contracts (i.e, Progressive Design Build, Alliance, IPD) will be considered an asset
