Winnipeg, Manitoba | Full-time, permanent | On-site | $100,000 to $130,000 base
Envy Consulting is leading a l search for a Logistics Manager on behalf of a long-established, privately held Canadian manufacturer of large, high-value electrical power equipment. You will own the movement of oversized, dimensional loads by rail, road and ocean across North America, lead a small logistics team, and be the transportation voice in design and project planning from the day a unit is quoted to the day it is offloaded at site.
About the opportunity
Our client has built in Winnipeg for several decades employs roughly 500 people locally, and has its production schedule booked solid through the fiscal year. The business is growing: a second, larger facility is planned for the end of the decade that will roughly double local headcount. Every unit is custom-engineered and built by hand, so every shipment is different, and logistics carries more weight here than in almost any other manufacturing setting. The Logistics Manager reports to the Field Service Manager and leads a team of two logistics specialists, one focused on truck and intermodal moves and one on rail. The outgoing manager has stayed on to support the transition. This is a seat where you set direction, build the team as volume grows, and are visible to senior leadership from day one.
What you will do
- Plan and manage the transport of oversized, dimensional and high-value equipment by rail, road, ocean and intermodal across North America: routing, carrier selection, permits and clearance approvals.
- Lead the rail program: railcar selection and booking (often six to eight months ahead), dimensional clearance, route studies and day-to-day relationships with Class I railways and their heavy-load desks.
- Negotiate and manage contracts with heavy-haul carriers, riggers and offloading providers; approve rates, purchase orders and invoices.
- Act as transportation lead in design, engineering and project planning meetings so shipping constraints are built into the product before it reaches the floor.
- Run final transportation readiness reviews before every shipment against customer, carrier, rail, regulatory and project requirements.
- Own the annual throughput plan from a logistics standpoint: work with engineering, production and contract administration so every unit ships on schedule each quarter.
- Provide freight estimates and mode and routing analysis to sales, quotations and supply chain.
- Ensure customs, export and import documentation is complete and compliant; manage Incoterms and cross-border requirements.
- Manage transit insurance and damage claims, inbound and outbound, and drive down handling and offloading risk.
- Review and approve storage charges when customer-owned equipment remains on site past scheduled ship dates.
- Lead, coach and develop the logistics team, and grow it as volume increases.
- Work within a unionized shop: understand the collective agreement and apply company policy consistently.
- Operate within the company's ISO 9001 quality system and recommend improvements to shipping methods.
What you bring
Required
- At least five years in logistics, transportation or traffic management involving oversized, dimensional and heavy-haul freight.
- Hands-on experience working directly with railways (CN, CPKC or other Class I carriers), including railcar selection, dimensional clearance, route studies and rail permitting.
- Three or more years leading people.
- Strong customs and cross-border knowledge: Incoterms, import and export documentation, duties, Canada and US requirements.
- A track record of negotiating with carriers and specialized transportation providers, and the relationships to show for it.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office and an ERP system (SAP preferred).
- Legally entitled to work in Canada on a permanent basis. Work authorization is confirmed at the first conversation.
Preferred
- Exposure to large electrical equipment, utilities, mining, wind or other heavy industrial products.
- Experience in a unionized manufacturing environment.
- Working knowledge of the mechanical side of heavy transport: centre of gravity, lifting points, tie-down and impact monitoring.
- Based in Manitoba, or ready to relocate.
Who does well here
The client is clear about fit. They want someone who learns the product and the process before changing them, who shares credit, and who stays calm when a rail car does not show up and the quarter depends on it. Technical depth gets you the interview; humility and the ability to build trust with engineers, shop floor supervisors and carriers gets you the job.
Compensation and benefits
- Base salary of $100,000 to $130,000, depending on experience.
- Discretionary annual bonus tied to plant results.
- Extended health and dental benefits, majority employer-paid.
- Group RSP and pension plan with employer matching.
- Three weeks of vacation to start, with flexibility for experienced candidates.
- Relocation assistance available for the right candidate.
