Job summary

Listuguj Nipugt Project Lead will spearhead the three-year forest stewardship initiative in Listuguj, grounded in Mi’gmaq knowledge and governance. The role reports to the Forestry Manager of Natural Resources and engages with a cross-departmental Working Committee and a Community Advisory Circle.

The successful candidate will coordinate activities, engage Elders and youth, support stewardship planning, and ensure respectful, self-determined community processes throughout the project lifetime.

Summary of Function:

The Listuguj Nipugt Project Lead will lead the implementation of the three-year Listuguj Forest Stewardship Project (Listuguj Nipugt). This community-led initiative is dedicated to strengthening Listuguj’s understanding and practice of biodiversity conservation through the protection, restoration, and stewardship of the Listuguj Forest, grounded in Mi’gmaq knowledge, values, and governance. Reporting to the Natural Resources Forestry Manager, the Project Lead will coordinate the implementation of an established project work plan in collaboration with a cross-departmental Working Committee (Natural Resources and Executive Office) and a Community Advisory Circle. The successful candidate will build relationships across the community, facilitate meaningful engagement, coordinate project activities, and support the development of long-term stewardship tools, including a Nipugt Stewardship Plan.

Job Duties:

• Lead the implementation of the three-year Listuguj Nipugt Project work plan, ensuring project objectives, timelines, and deliverables are achieved.
• Coordinate and facilitate meetings with the Working Committee and project partners.
• Establish an Advisory Circle of community cultural, language and knowledge holders, to support the project’s alignment with Mi’gmaq values and principles.
• Build and maintain collaborative relationships with community members, Elders, Knowledge Holders, youth, staff, government agencies, and external partners.
• Oversee consultations with external stakeholders for the related “Aboriginal-Led Protected Area” designation process.
• Plan and facilitate community engagement sessions, workshops, and consultations to gather input and strengthen community participation in forest stewardship.
• Ensure project activities are carried out in a respectful manner that reflects Mi’gmaq values, community priorities, and principles of self-determination.
• Develop and coordinate a community-based forest stewardship inventory process, including data collection and monitoring activities.
• Coordinate training opportunities that build local capacity in forest stewardship, biodiversity conservation, and land-based practices.
• Organize cultural, educational, and social gatherings that promote community connections to the forest and support intergenerational knowledge sharing.
• Support the development of the Listuguj Nipugt Stewardship Plan by coordinating research, community input, and technical information.
• Support the Executive Office (negotiations) in the development of a Code of Practice (harvesting) that reflects Mi’gmaq values, knowledge, and stewardship principles.
• Monitor project progress and prepare reports for leadership, funding agencies, and project partners.
• Manage project budgets, schedules, and reporting requirements in accordance with funding agreements.
• Identify opportunities for partnerships, collaboration, and additional funding that supports the sustainability of the project goals.
• Perform other related duties as assigned from the Working Committee

Requirements:

• Postsecondary education in natural resources, environmental studies, Indigenous governance, community development, biology, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Familiarity with conducting research using Indigenous approaches and two-eyed seeing (etuaptmumq).
• Experience leading or coordinating community-based projects with multiple partners and stakeholders.
• Knowledge of biodiversity conservation, forest stewardship, and/or ecological restoration.
• Understanding of Mi’gmaq culture, values, governance, and community engagement practices, or a demonstrated willingness to learn.
• Excellent organizational, facilitation, and project management skills.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills.
• Experience with report writing, budgeting, and grant-funded projects is considered an asset.
• Ability to work independently while fostering collaborative relationships.
• Willingness to travel within the community and project area.
