Job summary

Pic River Development Corporation's Biigtigong Nishnaabeg community seeks a Cultural Coordinator to develop and deliver culture-focused projects that weave traditional teachings into modern operations. The role acts as a bridge between traditional wisdom and administration, incorporating mental, physical, and spiritual aspects of Nishnaabeg culture into program delivery.

Qualifications

  • Community Knowledge: Have a deep understanding of Biigtigong Nishnaabeg history, cultural practices, and values.
  • Language Awareness: Proficiency or strong commitment to learning the Ojibway language within programming and staff training.
  • Completed Secondary Education and obtained Grade 12 diploma.
  • Complete and pass a Criminal Reference Check.
  • Familiarity of Biigtigong ancestral lands and land use activities, both historical and current.
  • Ability to perform public presentations and speaking.
  • Strong communication skills with ability to clearly and concisely present information.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a team.
  • Must have reliable transportation to and from work (no bus routes).

Responsibilities

  • Provide Guidance and assistance to community departments to support programming needs regarding culture, land-based learning, and language integration.
  • Assist in re-constructing the Biigtigong Nishnaabeg Aadsookaanan (Sacred Stories).
  • Plan, organize and coordinate cultural workshops, programming and activities, teachings, ceremonies, and healing practices for clients and staff as required.
  • Work collectively with the language revitalization project and assist in the development and dissemination of culturally and linguistically appropriate literature for educational materials.
  • Assist in developing a community-based storytelling and local history project.
  • Provide guidance and support in coordinating traditional/cultural practices for funeral gatherings while assisting with arrangements for fires, tipi set up, and/or other preparations.
  • Facilitate community information sessions with external stakeholders working within the community to promote an understanding of the community and culture
  • Coordinate and present cultural awareness sessions at HMC
  • Oversee the operations and use of Turtle Lodge by coordinating schedules, supporting events, and ensuring the space is maintained and stocked appropriately.

About the role:

Working out of the Biigtigong Community Development Dept., the Cultural Coordinator will be responsible for the development and delivery culturally orientated projects and programs that will integrate traditional teachings into the operations of Biigtigong Nishnaabeg. The Cultural Coordinator will act as a bridge between traditional wisdom and modern administration, incorporating the mental, physical, and spiritual aspects of Nishnaabeg culture into the development and delivery of projects.


The Cultural Coordinator will be hired through PRDC and will report to Russel Twance, Community Development Director.


Responsibilities:
