Job summary

Listuguj Mi’gmaq Government is seeking a Community-Based Researcher Project Lead to guide communityengagement and research initiatives. The role centers on developing workplans, conducting background research, and supporting negotiations projects within the Executive Office of the Listuguj Mi’gmaq Government.

The successful candidate will contribute to evidence-based decision making, align with Mi’gmaq protocols, and advance governance, land stewardship, and related initiatives.

Qualifications

• Post-secondary education or demonstrated experience in research, law, Indigenous studies, governance, social sciences, or a related field.
• Experience conducting community-based research, interviews, focus groups, and literature reviews.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills, including report writing and facilitation.

Responsibilities

• Lead and support priority initiatives by developing workplans, tracking milestones, organizing meetings, and ensuring timely progress.
• Monitor progress, identify needs or issues, and provide regular updates to leadership and project teams.
• Coordinate with Executive Office to implement activities and ensure timelines for project milestones.
• Establish and coordinate a co-governance committee and workplan for relevant sites and initiatives.
• Develop, oversee, and implement community engagements (surveys, sessions, focus groups) for Negotiations projects.
• Create briefing notes and information packages to support decision-making and community understanding.
• Prepare summaries, reports, and other knowledge products for decision-making.
• Develop tools to gather feedback from community members respectfully.
• Perform other research, facilitation, and administrative duties within the Executive Office as assigned.

Title: Community-Based Researcher Project Lead

Start Date: September 2026

Term: Fixed-Term with the possibility of becoming full-time.

Summary of Function

The Community-Based Researcher Project Lead will lead and support the development and implementation of community-based engagements, support the development and implementation of workplans, and conduct background research for negotiations projects within the Executive Office of the Listuguj Mi’gmaq Government (LMG).

This position will contribute to evidence-based inclusive decision making for initiatives that advance Mi’gmaq models of governance, Indigenous-based laws, and land stewardship. This position will seek to carry out activities guided by Indigenous (Mi’gmaq) protocols and principles and grounded in the reality and needs of Listuguj community. Specific projects that this position will support and/or lead include, but are not limited to the Listuguj Land Code, Battle of the Restigouche Initiative, Law Making Project, and Self-Governance. The Community-based Researcher and Project Lead works with the negotiation team under the general supervision of the Senior Researcher.

Job Duties

• Work with the negotiations team to lead and support priority initiatives by developing workplans, tracking milestones, organizing meetings, and helping to ensure that activities move forward in a timely and coordinated manner.
• Monitor progress, identify emerging needs or issues in the community, and provide regular updates to the Senior Researcher and relevant project teams.
• Coordinate and collaborate with Executive Office to implement activities and ensure timelines for the acceptance of Listuguj Land Code
• Establish and coordinate a co-governance committee and workplan for the Battle of the Restigouche National Historic Site, including re-designation, renaming of the site and land transfer
• Develop, oversee, and implement community engagements for various projects and topics within the Executive Office (Negotiations) (i.e., surveys, in-person sessions, focus groups)
• Research, analysis, and synthesis of background information and briefing notes on specific topics
• Create content (information packages) on specific topics or projects using a variety of methods (i.e., newsletters, info-posters, presentations, briefing materials)
• Prepare clear written summaries, briefing materials, reports, and other knowledge products to support decision-making and community understanding
• Develop tools to safely and respectfully gather feedback and perspectives from community members about various topics
• Perform other related research, facilitation, communications, coordination, and administrative duties within the Executive Office as assigned.

Requirements

• Post-secondary education or demonstrated experience in research, law, Indigenous studies, governance, social sciences, or a related field.
• Experience conducting community-based research, interviews, focus groups, and literature reviews.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills, including report writing and facilitation.
• Ability to work independently, manage multiple project streams, and meet deadlines.
• Strong interpersonal and relationship-building skills, particularly within Mi’gmaq and Indigenous community contexts.
• Knowledge of Mi’gmaw governance, law, culture, or land-based initiatives is a strong asset.
• Proficiency or knowledge of the Mi’gmaw language is considered an asset.
