Job summary

YMCA BC in Surrey is seeking a Lifeguard/Swim Instructor to join our aquatics team. The role involves safeguarding participants, delivering lessons, and promoting healthy activity within a supportive community.

As part of YMCA BC, you’ll contribute to diverse programs, engage with members, and support a Strong Kids Campaign while upholding high safety and service standards.

Qualifications

• Current Standard First Aid certificate (valid within 3 years).
• CPR level C and AED certificate (valid within 1 year).
• National Lifeguard - Pool Option required.
• Experience as Lifeguard or Swimming Instructor preferred.
• YMCA Aquatic Fitness Certificate or equivalent preferred.
• Access to reliable transportation or a vehicle.
• Advanced leadership courses are an asset.
• Strong customer service skills.
• Criminal Reference Check/Vulnerable Sector Search within 6 months.
• Three satisfactory references.

Responsibilities

• Guard and teach swimming lessons in a positive, professional manner.
• Build relationships with YMCA members, visitors, and colleagues.
• Promote philanthropy through the Strong Kids Campaign.
• Develop lesson plans and progressive evaluations for participants.
• Ensure program design meets participant needs at all levels.
• Lead program delivery and verify content meets criteria.
• Perform administrative duties and record-keeping.
• Ensure safety by following YMCA policies across facilities.
• Assist with training staff/volunteers as needed.
• Remain flexible and willing to learn new skills; adjust shifts.
• Attend staff meetings, planning sessions, and training events.

Location: Tong Louie Family YMCA (14988 57th Ave., Surrey, BC V3S 7S6)

Term: Full -Time, Permanent (*Please note - this Full-Time position is not suitable for a high school student)

Hours: 35 hours per week

Shift: Shifts vary but include weekday mornings, evenings, and weekends. Availability to work weekday mornings is required.

Start Date: ASAP

Salary: $23.59 per hour

Nature & Scope

The Lifeguard/Swim Instructor will report to the Aquatics Supervisor and work collaboratively with other members of the YMCA team to provide a safe and fun aquatics environment.

Major Responsibilities

• Guarding and teaching swimming lessons in a positive and professional manner
• Build meaningful relationships through positive daily interaction with YMCA members, visitors, and colleagues
• Promote philanthropy through the YMCA’s annual Strong Kids Campaign
• Develop lesson plans for various programs and administer progressive evaluations for participants
• Ensure program design, lay-out, and offerings meet the needs of all participants at various levels
• Lead program delivery, while ensuring contents meet the appropriate criteria and outline
• Perform general administrative duties and record keeping responsibilities
• Ensure the safety of all members, participants, staff, and property by following YMCA standards/policies/procedures and ensuring they are maintained amongst all members and staff, including all locker rooms and spectator viewing areas.
• Assist with training new staff/volunteers in procedures and practices
• Remain flexible – willing to learn new skills, alter shifts
• Attend staff meetings, planning sessions and training events as required

• Successful candidates will be required to provide a current and satisfactory Criminal Reference Check/Vulnerable Sector Search issued no later than six (6) months preceding your start date
• Successful candidate will be required to provide 3 satisfactory references
