Job summary

The Municipality of North Cowichan is seeking a Lifeguard/Instructor for a part-time, temporary role through December 14, 2026 or until the incumbent returns. The position involves providing quality aquatic experiences and progressive educational opportunities for the public.

Qualifications

• Must hold and maintain National Lifeguard Pool Option, Lifesaving Instructor, Standard First Aid, and Swim Instructor certifications.
• Demonstrated ability to deliver aquatic programs and supervise casual lifeguards.
• Proficient with Windows-based systems and program registration/facility booking software.
• Ability to manage water safety, rescue skills, and program delivery in a busy aquatic environment.
• Knowledge of pool operations, water balancing, and regulatory requirements.
• Ability to work weekends, evenings, statutory holidays and shift work.
• Capable of working independently or under supervision while maintaining safety standards.

The Municipality of North Cowichan (population 31,900) is located in the beautiful Cowichan Valley on Southern Vancouver Island, between Nanaimo and Victoria. The Lifeguard/Instructor will be responsible for providing feedback and direction to casual Lifeguards. Scheduling is based on operational needs and in accordance with the Collective Agreement (Appendix A). The hours of work include shift, nights and weekend work. Deployment to other duties may be required from time to time.

Required Skills, Qualifications, and Abilities:

1. Minimum 16 years of age and completion of Grade 10.
2. Possession and maintenance of the following certifications: 1) National Lifeguard - Pool Option, 2) Lifesaving Instructor, 3) Standard First Aid, and 4) Swim Instructor. National Lifeguard Water Park Certification is not required, but may be considered an asset depending on operational needs.
3. Demonstrable skills in a Windows-driven network system, including the practical use of Microsoft Office programs and program registration and facility booking software.
4. Demonstrable theory, practical skills and abilities related to water rescue, safety, prevention, program content, delivery and communication. This includes assisting in the delivery of a wide range of innovative aquatic programs, services and events.
5. Basic knowledge of the pool filtration system including water balancing.
6. Basic knowledge of and commitment to WorkSafeBC, Ministry of Health and the BC Safety Authority procedures and other regulatory requirements as related to the safe operation of aquatic and fitness facilities.
7. Demonstrable ability to receive and implement directions, manage competing priorities, meet facility standards and ideals and work towards excellence in the operation of the Aquatic Centre.
8. Demonstrable ability to understand basic aquatic mechanical operations.
9. Ability to work weekends, evenings, statutory holidays and shift work.
10. Ability to work independently as well as under supervision.
11. The position may be physically demanding; candidate must be able to successfully perform all duties associated with the position. A medical certificate attesting to suitability for this position may be required.
